What are some of your resolutions for the New Year? Mine usually
include eating more healthily, exercising more, and other "earthly"
habits. I will include in my resolutions this year more about the really
important aspects of life - my spiritual life and time with my Lord.
Today's devotional and scriptures are such blessed reminders about
taking time to whisper God's name and allow Him to fill us with His
Peace. There isn't any doubt in my mind that His Peace IS what we most long for - and that IS clearly available to us!
The lyrics in the beautiful hymn, "It Is Well With My Soul" remind us that our soul can be filled with peace - when God is with us and we are with Him.
What are some of your resolutions that might help me and others who are striving to walk closer to our Lord?
Jesus Calling has obviously touched the lives and hearts of many people, as shown by numerous stories about how the words from a particular day spoke directly to them. The purpose of this blog is to provide a forum for us to share our thoughts and reactions to the words of the author and/or the scripture.

"Emmanuel" - God With Us - Every Day!
I praise God for His Promises that I can be a new creation made
to do good works and filled with His Love! Some of the words in today's reading spoke so clearly and profoundly: "The closer to Me you grow, the more fully you become your true self - the one I (God) designed you to be." However, we are also reminded that this can only happen when we give ourselves totally to our Lord and remain in Him as He remains in us (John 15:4).
I'm one of those who would like to celebrate Christmas year-round! I keep in view several small nativity scenes to remind me of the miraculous birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. These tiny figures also remind me of the fact that I, also, am God's workmanship - "created in Jesus Christ to do good works." Without God's most amazing love and grace by sending His Son, today's scriptures would be null and void!
I just opened an email with the "Best Christmas Lights Display" Even though it's several days after Christmas, it touched me in that the music was the most appropriate but "different" for this celebration. This hymn, "Amazing Grace" might be one that helps us praise God for His glorious gift every day! Please help me and other readers find ways to keep this celebration at the forefront of our lives throughout the year.

Trust and Obey
The first two statements in today's reading spoke loudly to me: "Trust Me (God) with every fiber of your being! What I can accomplish in and through you is proportional to how much you depend on Me!"
What profound thoughts - and direction for our lives! I pray daily for God to use me in His ways but this devotional makes it clear that it is imperative that I trust Him first - "Trust in Him at all times." That constant trust is how we grow in His Presence and attain His Peace - and should not come through in only in the good or only in the bad times of our lives!
I pray that the lyrics in the beautiful old hymn "Trust and Obey" will speak to you as they did to me as a reminder of trusting and obeying our Lord.

God IS Our Refuge and Strength!
Today's scripture from Psalm 46 is one that I memorized for a class many years ago. What's amazing is that I can still recall (at least the first part) of that passage and have done so on many occasions. What a blessing to be reassured that God is with us and we don't have to be afraid!
Today's devotional reading is so relevant to our world filled with stories of "cataclysmic circumstances!" When I was in education, I went to a conference about how to be a positive parent/teacher/administrator. The first thing the speaker told us was that if we started our day by only watching news shows, there is a good chance that we will NOT be thinking helpful, encouraging thoughts or using those kind of words! I pray that you will join me in making a commitment/resolution for the New Year that we will start every single day by making time to commune with our Lord.
I praise God for His words of encouragement in today's scripture passages and also from John 14:27:
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." What "Blessed Assurance" that we have from Him that no matter what, He IS our refuge and strength.

God Prepares Us for the Road Ahead
Last year at this time, I had just returned from a rather "harrowing" trip to see family and
friends in another state. The harrowing part was the ride home in the midst of a major
ice/snow storm! I
don't know a better word than "terrified" would describe the way I felt
for hour upon hour as the snow grew deeper and the roads grew slicker
with ice. We saw dozens of vehicles in ditches and even in a forested
area with lights beaming through the trees. The message that it was time
to stop was when we saw a huge 18-wheeler truck overturned in a ditch a few feet from us!
Today's devotional is such a blessed reminder of the importance of stopping to take the time to be strengthened by our Lord rather than trying to keep on by myself. This is the time when God fills me with His Strength and Peace and Guidance.
Please join me in taking time everyday - or many times a day to be still in front of the Lord, then to praise Him for His many blessings. I can't thank Him enough for a safe trip home for me and my family - and for the message to take time to stop!

The Gift That Keeps On Giving!
What a joy to know without a doubt that God's love for me is perfect
and goes on and on! Sarah Young reminds us that what DOES change is our
awareness of His Most Loving Presence.
All of today's scripture passages are related to God's everlasting, perfect, unfailing Love. I thank Him for such love and pray that His love might flow through each one of us as we are God's hands and feet here on Earth.
The Christmas carol, "Joy to the World" is a good one to focus on today. It reminds us to let our hearts make room for our Lord. as we continue celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ - today and each and everyday!

Celebrate the Coming of the Messiah!
I pray that one way that you worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is to focus on the words and music of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah! If you have time to listen to the entire "Messiah" today, it will likely enrich and bless your Christmas! (This link only includes various parts rather than the full version.)
Joy to the world; the Lord has come!!!

Celebrate the Wonder of Jesus' Birth!
We celebrate at Christmas the birth of Christ our Lord in Bethlehem!
We are also reminded today to celebrate our own "rebirth into eternal
life" - "the hope of glory!" I praise God and thank Him for giving us that hope!
I pray that you take the time in the midst of celebrations to focus on this "Holy Night" and God's most precious gift.

He IS the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
The magnitude of the Christmas story is so powerful and humbling!
Today's devotional and scriptures remind us of what the Lord has done
for us. I rejoice in His tremendous Love and pray that His light and
love might shine through me.
Please join with me in focusing on words of some of the beautiful old Christmas hymns including this one: "Love Came Down at Christmas." I pray that it speaks to your heart the way it did for me. Please share with me and other readers any Christmas hymns that are especially meaningful to you.

Jesus - The "Majestic Mystery"
At this time of year, I often get so caught up in shopping, cooking,
etc., that I forget the wonder of the birth of our Lord Jesus - the
"majestic mystery!" Today's devotional reading and scriptures are
blessed reminders to stop what I'm doing so I can have time to praise
and worship my Lord!
I pray that you enjoy and listen carefully to the words of this this beautiful Christmas song, "What Child Is This?" Join me in focusing on of the fact that He is Christ the King!

Have You Seen/Experienced Any Miracles Lately?
The scripture passage from 2 Corinthians 5:7 is such a blessing to
remember - that "We live by faith, not by sight." Sometimes we see and
feel God's Presence and Love and Guidance. Sarah Young's words that
especially spoke to me were regarding seeing miracles - or not - with
the "naked eye. She went on to say that when we live by faith we can see them clearly. I believe that is true of miracles and also of seeing God's Presence and Glory! However, it is up to us to stop and look and listen for these miracles and God's Presence in our lives!
Please share with me and other readers any miracles that you have seen or experienced. Of course, the greatest miracle of all is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ! I pray that we all may slow down to rejoice in that miracle.

How Can I Be a "Praise Song" for God?
Today's devotional and scriptures remind us of the fact that Jesus was "tempted" on many occasions to make the pain go away! When difficulties and tragedies happen in life, I have to admit that I don't have the self-control of Jesus. I sometimes beg Him to take away the pain and give me His Peace. As I was reading today's
devotional and scripture, I had to ask myself, "How can I - or could I
be a 'praise song' in midst of the trials and tribulations of life?"
I pray daily for God to fill me with His Spiritual gifts: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control. After reflecting on these gifts, I realize that self-control is one (of several) that I am most lacking. Today's readings prompted me again of continually seek the Spirit of God to live within me so that I be a praise song for Him.
Will you share your thoughts and/or stories about how God has led you to be a "praise song" for Him even in trials and sorrows?

God's Presence and Guidance
Today's scripture passage from Proverbs 16:3 is one that changed my
life several years ago. I was trying to make the big decision about
retiring early from my job. One morning I sat down and randomly opened
my Bible to look for God's guidance. My eyes quickly fell to this
passage: "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed." At that moment it was clear about my future - as long as I committed it to the Lord - and that's what happened!
Words from Sarah Young that especially spoke to me today were about allowing God to be in the "forefront" of our awareness. It's up to me to seek His Presence in all things in order for His Peace to fill me. It sounds so simple but admittedly is a challenge! How do you go about seeking His Presence in all things and keeping Him in the "forefront" of your awareness?

Today's Problems -- Everylasting Glory!
I remember the years following my divorce, I was "plagued" by many challenges. I will admit that I became very frustrated with this idea of being thankful for my problems. Today's reading and scriptures are quite clear in guiding us in this matter as is Romans 5:1-5:
(NIV)Peace and Hope
The words from 2 Corinthians especially spoke to me today about the everlasting glory that far "outweighs" all our troubles. I thank God for this Promise and pray that all those going through difficult times of mourning or illness or other difficulties may know, understand and believe our Lord's Promise.
I pray that you will share your understanding and experiences regarding this devotional and related scriptures. I still need help in this area as do so many others I have met along life's journey.
(NIV)Peace and Hope
5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
I remember telling my pastor that I thought I had a "lifetime supply" of perseverance and character! It took me many years to reflect on that time of my life as one in which I grew spiritually more than any other!

Let Light Shine Out of Darkness
When life gets challenging at home, school, or country, we may ask, "How can light ever shine out of this
darkness?" The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is the most profound example of how that CAN happen. Yesterday in my church, our pastor talked about the fact that this Light of our Lord does not come just at Christmas. He continually lights our way and world when we ask Him to do so. - It is up to us to ask and seek - and we WILL find Him.
Do you have an experience to share about how light came through in a dark time in your life? We all need to hear each others stories as we constantly seek a closer relationship with our Lord.

"Work Ethic" vs. God As Our first Love
In today's world, we often hear the term "work ethic" - and how some generations seem to have more of it than others! As a retired school administrator, I do think that this is very important, and I remember honoring teachers who had an exceptional work ethic. However, today's reading and scriptures remind us there is something much more important - Seeking God's Presence above all else! It is only through making God first in our lives that God's Glory "brightens the world around you."
Another powerful related scripture is Matthew 6:33: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. A hymn that reiterates these words is one by the same title: "Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God." I pray that we can focus on these crucial words in order that change our lives and help us to make God first!

Hope in The Lord
A good friend (and recent cancer survivor) and I recently had a discussion about the importance of hope in our lives. We agreed that the hope of heaven is what keeps us going with life's struggles here on Earth. Sarah Young puts it so clearly in today's devotional reading: "This hope (of heaven) keeps you spiritually alive during dark times of adversity; it brightens your path and heightens your awareness of My (God's) Presence."
I previously shared the story of my father, a non-church-goer, on what we thought was his last hours on this earth. My mother and I asked the hospital chaplain to try to speak with him even though he had been seemingly unconscious all night. The first thing the chaplain did was ask him how he was feeling. My dad's response was, "I'm doing pretty well in spite of what everyone has been saying all night!" The next question from the chaplain was about his faith in God. My father's response was, "My only hope is in the Lord!" That simple statement gave my family a peace that could only come from those words, as my father lived for several more months. When it was his time to leave this earth, our family was able to let him go and rest in the Peace of our Lord.
For me, that's what today's devotional and scriptures are telling us so that we "may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." The lyrics in the beautiful hymn, "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" are blessed reminders of God's Love - and the HOPE that He gives to us!

Rest in the Lord!
Today's devotional and scriptures are such good reminders about how
we so often get caught up in the worries and stresses of the world! What
a blessing to KNOW without a doubt that we can "rest in the Lord" and
be totally at Peace with Him! However, there is more to this than our saying, "OK Lord, I need some of your rest and peace!" Today's reading tells us that we need to start each day spending time with God. This is a spiritual discipline that I am working on, and I can tell you that it DOES make a difference in my days. My spiritual director told me that she simply cannot move through the day without starting the day in silence and solitude with Him.
The scripture from Proverbs 3:6 is one of my favorites that I have memorized and that I have needed and used in countless situations. However, I also use verse 5 which is "Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not to your own understanding."
I pray that you will join me in developing this spiritual discipline of starting each and everyday by spending time communing (speaking and listening) with Our Lord.

Do We Really Take Time to "Be Holy?"
I appreciate the words in today's devotional about the definition of "holy" - as being set apart for sacred use of being totally Present with my Lord. I began thinking about times during the day that I truly set aside for that sacred use. I
will admit that those times for me are not what they should. It was an
"Aha!" moment when I realized that I am only depriving myself of the
blessings that God is waiting to give to me when I don't spend that
sacred time with Him.
Powerful words from Sarah Young were that this is how we are "transformed" or re-created to be like our Lord intends for us to be. She also writes about attaining God's Peace through setting aside time for worship and communion with our Lord. Can there be anything more important in life than to be like God wants us to be and to be filled with His Peace? This beautiful hymn has been a good reminder for me as I pray it will be for you about the importance of spending that time "to be holy" with our Lord: "Take Time to Be Holy."
What do you do to ensure that you TAKE the time to be holy - even when days are so hectic that it seems there isn't time for one more thing?

God Will Take Care of You
There are many scripture passages such as those in today's reading about the fact that God really wants us to "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." Some
of the words in today's reading about God's loving care spoke
especially to me; they were about the way we see things - from an
earthly view - rather from God's view. I cherish the thought that He
really is close to me and caring for me - even in this "fallen world."
When I started reading today's devotional, I immediately thought of the gospel song "God Will Take Care of You." I pray that these words and the beautiful video will speak to you as they have to me in my worship time today.

Be "Persistent" in Prayer!
The story of how many years that Abraham and Sarah prayed for a child
is most enlightening to me! I have heard people say that once we pray
for something, we should not ask again but rather just let God take over
that request. However, this beautiful story of the faith and
"perseverance" of Sarah and Abraham tells me not to give up on my
prayers - even when I'm praying for the same thing day after day!
I realize that God doesn't always answer my prayers the way I want - and when I want them answered - as is written in today's devotional reading. However, this reading is a blessed reminder of asking for and allowing God's Presence and Light to shine on my hopes, thoughts and dreams. I am gradually realizing that He doesn't always do what I ask - but He sometimes does CHANGE what I ask so that it is more in line with His Will.
Do you have a story to share about times when you prayed for something over long periods of time? Did it happen the way you asked or has God shown you a different answer than you anticipated - but a better answer?

We Can "Choose" Joy!
Joy vs. happiness was the point of a discussion in a recent Sunday
School class. How can we have joy even with unhappy experiences in life?
Today's scripture from James 1:2 related closely to this discussion: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of any kind." I'll admit that at first glance, it seems a bit too much of a challenge! However, after reading the entire devotional and scriptures, and thinking through the recent discussion, I now understand! A comment that someone made is that "Happiness is short-lived, but true joy is eternal!" By focusing on that thought and on the scriptures from Psalm and Isaiah, I feel blessed by the reminders that God is upholding me by His hand! I don't have to be afraid! I can experience His Joy even during life's trials!
Have you had experiences of feeling joy even though things around you made you feel unhappy? Do you see the difference - once our Lord is int he picture?

Where is a "Safe Place?"
With so much going on in this world, many people often feel afraid and live in daily fear. Today's
reading and scriptures are such blessed reminders that when we stay
focused on our Lord, His Presence is with us - wherever we go! We CAN
feel safety in His Presence! After all, we can find this repeated promise by Jesus: "Do not be afraid!"
The scripture from Psalm 23:4 is one of peace and reassurance in that we know "Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me" - no matter what! I praise God for this and all the Promises from our Lord!
A beautiful related gospel hymn is, "His Eye Is On the Sparrow;" - If He watches over the sparrows, surely He watches over me!
Please share any other Christian music or scriptures that have comforted you when you were afraid.

God's Riches vs. Worldly Riches
It took me many years to understand the meaning of today's scripture
from Philippians 4:10. The words that I failed to focus on were "according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." When
I thought about God supplying my needs, I think it must have been based
on hearing a TV preacher telling me that God wanted me to have a big
fancy car!
Several years ago, I read a book called "When All You've Ever Wanted in Life Isn't Enough." The author discussed countless movie stars and super-wealthy people who expressed their unhappiness with life. - They were still longing for "something" but didn't know what! Today's devotional and scriptures makes it clear that our deepest longings can only be fulfilled through the wisdom and knowledge and Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Today's reading and scriptures reminded me of a children's Bible song that we sang when I taught at a Christian school: "Silver and Gold Have I None." Another powerful related hymn is "I'd Rather Have Jesus." I praise God for giving me the richest of all blessings - His Most Precious Son, Jesus!

Keep Our Eyes Focused On Our Lord - Even At Christmas!!!
Today's reading and scriptures sound simple but are sometimes challenging for me - to keep my gaze fixed on God!
I think I may spend too much time watching the news! How can I keep my focus on God when what I mostly hear in the media is about all the bad things going on in my community, country and world. Next comes friends' e-mails that are filled with stories regarding what is bad about politics, or education, or holidays. It seems that many of the messages being sent are so negative that they can only bring about divisiveness. Another point of concern is that many are filled with half-truths - or un-truths!
The email I received a few days ago is about how bad things are regarding Christmas; it announced overpoweringly how Christ has been taken out of Christmas. If anyone else has received this message, I hope that you have the time and energy and work of God's Spirit to add some words about "What am I doing about this to make it better?" or "How can I help my neighbors, community, country re-take the real meaning of Christmas?"
The writer of the original email encourages everyone to send it to all our friends. I would like to ask that we all send messages to our friends about putting Christ back into Christmas and/or where we see Christ's light and love shining throughout the world! Why can't we send even more messages about looking steadily at our Lord and His most amazing Love and Grace - rather than the negative ones that only cause worry, hurt and discord??
I think I may spend too much time watching the news! How can I keep my focus on God when what I mostly hear in the media is about all the bad things going on in my community, country and world. Next comes friends' e-mails that are filled with stories regarding what is bad about politics, or education, or holidays. It seems that many of the messages being sent are so negative that they can only bring about divisiveness. Another point of concern is that many are filled with half-truths - or un-truths!

A Closer Walk With God
I had never thought about some of Sarah Young's words in today's reading about "multiplying duties in the observance of religion." She goes ahead to write about giving God our time and money - but without giving Him our Heart - what He most wants. These
words made me think about some of the "duties" that I and others do for
the sake of "the church." I believe that it is important for each of us
to "work for the Lord" as part of our commitment to Him, but I also
realize that I sometimes forget the "Why?" and "For whom?" of what I'm
doing!
Today's scripture from Colossians 3:23 especially spoke to me as it says it so clearly - to work with all my heart for the Lord - but not for men! The only way I can do that is by staying close to my Savior so that He will lead me and show me His way. The old gospel hymn, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," immediately came to mind while reading this devotional. This rendition includes a beautiful video plus the lyrics. I pray that you will focus on these words in today's worship time.
Do you have practices that you will share with me and others about how you walk closer with our Lord?

Surely the Lord Is In This Place!
Have you ever been in a place of special beauty or love in which your thought or comment was, "Surely the Lord is in this place."
I remember thinking that in places of spectacular beauty such as standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon and when I was driving up Mount Denali in Alaska. There's nothing else to
say in such massive beauty!
Today's reading is a magnificent reminder that we don't have to be on a mountain top for God to be present with us. However, we often get so busy that we just forget that HE IS WITH US, - even when we are not aware of it.
Yesterday I wrote about the goal of a spiritual director being one who helps others discern God's Presence in their lives. That is really what today's devotional is saying to me. I praise God for the knowledge of His loving Presence.
How do you seek and find God's Presence in daily situations in your life?

Getting Trained to Think Like Jesus
I recently completed coursework at a local seminary to be a certified
"spiritual director." We are not "directors," as such, but rather walk
with others to encourage them (and ourselves) to see God's Presence in
our lives. What often happens is that we begin to realize that God is
waiting for us to seek and find a closer relationship with Him. The
challenge is that it demands our time for this to happen.
Today's reading reminded me that God is my spiritual director - only when I allow Him to be. The only way for that to transpire is for me to spend time with Him. The scripture from Isaiah says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts; My ways are not your ways." However, Sarah Young's words tell us that God is "training" us to think His thoughts by spending time in His Presence.
"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful." This scripture gives us such a powerful message! If we truly want to be closer to our Lord and allow His thoughts to become our thoughts, this passage will guide us on where to begin.

The Name of Jesus
Many relevant thoughts spoke to me in today's devotional and scriptures. I began thinking about "attacks" on our mind in our present day world - especially during the Christmas season! I heard stories about people getting seriously injured from shopping "frenzies" in which shoppers sometimes push, shove, knock down, etc., others who are wanting the same item at a store. Why does this happen in the name of Christmas? What "attacks" our minds so much that we allow ourselves to get caught up in this kind of behavior?
I pray that we enjoy this time of celebration of the birth of our Lord by honoring Him in our thoughts and actions. Let's join together in drawing near to Him through calling upon His name so that we "will be filled with inexpressible and glorious Joy."
Please listen closely to this beautiful hymn as you begin your prayer time: "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, There's Something About Your Name."

God Tells Us, "Peace Be With You"
I hear so many people talk about the need for a "peaceful life." This is something that is so clearly promised by our Lord.
Since this is the beginning of the Christmas season, it is a special time to celebrate His Peace and Promises and Love. However, if you are like me, you are already asking yourself, "How can I get this done... and get this done... and get this done... all before Christmas?" That doesn't sound much like peace!
Another scripture passage related to this devotional is Isaiah 26:3
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
Please take the time to focus on the lyrics and photography of this beautiful gospel song about God's Peace: "Perfect Peace" by Laura Story. I pray that it will start your day by filling you with God's Peace.

Be Still - And Listen to Our Lord!
Today's reading is a wonderful reminder that to truly experience
God's eternal Love, we have to first be still in His Presence - and get
to know Him. In various Bible classes that I have been in, this subject
has repeatedly come up in that it seems to be the most difficult
spiritual discipline. What a blessing to know that "The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord" as we read in today's scripture from Jeremiah 31:3.
I have referred before to the hymn, "Be Still My Soul," but once again I am enjoying it today. Invariably, this time of silence and solitude brings about blessings; however, I need to remember to take the time to accept the fact that God - "Faithful will remain." Do you have another hymn or scripture passage that helps put you into communication (including listening) with our Lord and listen for His Word for your life?

Problems????
Do you know people or families who never seem to have problems? On
the outside, it looks like the "perfect" life! However, usually there
are many things going on in those families just as in mine. I would like
to know how people keep that kind of image. Is it because they have all
their priorities in order and look to our Lord in all things? On the
other hand, could it be that sometimes we want people to think our lives
are perfect - or that the problems will go away/fix themselves?
What do you think? Please share with me and others some answers about these difficult questions.

I REALLY DO NEED YOU, GOD!!
Do you feel like you are in constant need of God's Presence - the way I
do? Some of the words that were especially reassuring in this regard are, "You have realized that needing Me (God) is the key to knowing Me intimately, which is the gift above all gifts."
I hope that you have time to listen to the lyrics and enjoy the photos of the powerful prayer-hymn, "I Need Thee Every Hour" during your worship time today. I pray that you will be blessed as I have been!

Give Thanks For What the Lord Has Done!
What a wonderful reminder of how great is God's love: "Be awed by the vast dimension of My Love for you: wider, longer, higher, and deeper than anything you know!"
Today in the U.S., we are celebrating Thanksgiving. I pray that wherever we live that we take time today to thank the Lord for all that He has done for us. The lyrics of the hymn, "Give Thanks" are beautiful reminders of God's Love and Presence.
While reading today's devotional and scriptures, I thought of another powerful hymn, "Blessed Assurance." I enjoyed reading the lyrics and listening to the music, but I had not realized that these words were written by Fanny Crosby, a blind hymn writer! What a blessing these words have given to the world as she sang, "This is my story; This is my song; Praising my Savior all the day long."I began wondering what is my story - and what is yours? Let us include praise to our Lord in not only today's story but the ones that we live everyday!

Does Thankfulness Rule?
When I am able to spend several days in the Fall at a friend's lake house
in east Texas, I find that it is much easier to let "thankfulness rule!" That is a time when I'm
away from many of the worries of daily life. As I am able to watch thousands of
gold and red and yellow leaves being blown from the trees, it feels as if
God's Presence and love are touching the earth. I still remember a sermon by one of the pastors at my church when she said, "Every time you see a leaf fall or a flower in bloom, it is simply a way that God is saying "I love you!" What a glorious way for thankfulness to flourish!
Now that I'm home again, daily stresses quickly return! What a blessing to be reminded that even in these events, I CAN be thankful. It is only through doing so that I will be able to "see more and more of God's riches!"
As I sit quietly before my Lord, I am repeating today's scripture from Colossians 3:15: "Let the peace of Christ rule in my heart ...and be thankful." I pray that through God's most amazing grace that you and I will let thankfulness rule in our lives.

This is the Day the Lord Has Made!
I think I have shared in a previous blog about my years teaching
kindergarten in a private Christian school. We were expected to start
every day with prayer and singing a few songs about God's love and
glory. One of them was taken today's scripture from Psalms 118:24. This
version is a bit different than the one we sang but is still a wonderful
reminder to rejoice and be glad in this day: "This is the Day the Lord Has Made" I look back on those days and realize that by starting the day like this, we did recognize God's Presence and guidance. I also decided that the song and/or scripture from Psalms is one way I now commit to using as I begin my days.
Please join me today in taking time to stop and look for God's Presence in our lives - and rejoice and be glad in this and everyday! Let's praise God for this new day!

Pray Without Ceasing
This is another scripture passage that I sometimes find challenging.
How do we ever get to the point in which we can truly say that we pray
without ceasing?
Today's devotional and scriptures gave me encouragement about the fact that when our mind is occupied with thanking God, I "have no time for worrying or complaining." A few years ago the pastor at my church had a wonderful sermon regarding what happens physically, emotionally, and spiritually when we spend time complaining. In order to remind ourselves about our time used in complaining, he gave everyone a rubber bracelet. (I can't remember the words on the bracelet but I think it was something like, "Give thanks.") We were asked to move our bracelet from one arm to the other anytime we realized we were complaining. It was amazing - to me and many others - the realization of how much time we found ourselves using our mind in this negative way - and thus moving our bracelets! What a blessed reminder that did change lives - mine included!
I like the idea in today's scripture from Romans 15:13 that we "may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." This will be my hope as I strive to do a better job of praying without ceasing - to spend less time worrying or complaining. Please share with me and other readers how you have been able to grow in this direction.

Be Thankful - In All Things!
I will have to admit that this particular "command" for living the
Christian life is sometimes difficult for me! I keep asking myself, "Does this
scripture really mean what it says?" I appreciate Sarah Young's
encouraging words about the importance of giving thanks in ALL
circumstances - even though those circumstances might not change. Her
reassurance came to me in particular with the words, "Thankfulness opens
your heart to My Presence and your mind to My thoughts."
Do you give thanks for everything? Have you had a change of heart and/or reassurance of God's love and Presence when doing so? Please share you thoughts on this sometimes challenging scripture from Ephesians 5:20. Another related scripture is Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (which gives a slightly different light to this command).

Listen in Silence for the Lord
It came rather as a shock to me a few years ago that if we truly want
to grow closer to our Lord, we must spend quiet time with Him. I
realized that I had been a bit too proud at giving God my "grocery list"
of things that I thought He needed to do for me and others. I now
understand that might be o.k. at times. However, I also need to be silently with Him if I want to hear what He wants to tell me!
Total silence seems to be the best way for me to start this time; additionally, I do a little deep breathing along with a "breath prayer." (These short prayers can be as simple as "Jesus," "Abide in me," "Open my heart.") Then comes the hard part of trying to de-clutter my mind! When worries or thoughts about the day's activities come flying in, I try to immediately let them move out like leaves in a breeze blowing down a stream. Some people find it helpful to have quiet Christian music playing and others find it beneficial to first dwell on a scripture passage.
I'll have to admit that I usually don't have many moments of "epiphany." However, it somestimes amazes me that God's Peace and Presence have shown up when most needed - weeks later.
Friends tell me that for them, they feel a certain word or scripture was opened up to them during this quiet time. What about you? Do you have daily quiet times with our Lord? Please share with us how you have made this part of your worship time - and if you feel that this has been a time of spiritual growth for you.

Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart!
Several other devotionals in Jesus Calling have been on the
subject of having an "attitude of gratitude." I have shared about my
gratitude journal and the positive difference it has made in my life.
I recently helped teach a class at a church retreat about spiritual growth; one of the topics was gratitude and the importance of it. I found these links with very interesting information about what happens physically, mentally and spiritually when we have a "grateful heart." Here are a few of the links:
"Counting Your Blessings: How Gratitude Improves Your Health."
"Gratitude: Apply Liberally For Best Results"
"The Healing Power of Gratitude"
I pray for you that you have an attitude of gratitude as you "Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart" to our most Precious Lord and Savior.

God's Peace and Presence
No matter where in the world that we live, I hope that we can all
celebrate a time of giving thanks - today and next week and next year - to our Lord for His Presence and
Peace and Love. Today's devotional and scriptures are so clear in
declaring God's Promises - but also clear that we need to thank Him in
all things.
What a blessing are the words given to us in today's scripture passages: God gives us Peace; He is with us in all things; God wants us to praise Him continually.
Please take the time to listen to the music and read the lyrics of "Now We Thank Thee All Our God" in your worship time today. I pray that this hymn might serve as a reminder to us thank and praise our Lord every day of our lives.

Who Do We Please?
I grew up in a home in which I felt that it was impossible to please my family. No matter how hard I tried at anything, it was not
quite good enough. What a blessing to be reminded that God IS pleased
with us. The scripture from Ephesians 2:8-9 made it especially clear:
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Today's reading and scriptures were very comforting. Some of Sarah Young's words that I will remember are: "Shift your focus from your performance to My (God's) radiant Presence...Thankfulness and trust are your primary receptors."
Our responsibility is to thank Him and trust Him! Join me and others in praising God for His never-ending love - even at times when we don't measure up to our own expectations.
Have you had experiences in which you felt that you were not good enough? I pray that you will share with me and other readers how you handled these experiences.

Life As An Adventure?
Do you look at life as an adventure (or maybe as a journey)
- as Sarah Young suggested in today's reading? I used to wonder how
God's Will could "prescribe" every movement, thought, etc. After much
reading (such as The Will of God by Weatherhead and Why?
by Adam Hamilton), reflection and prayer, I now perceive God's Will as
an adventure or journey with Him at my side. Many years ago, I heard
this quote and it has been comforting in so many situations:
God does not give us a blueprint for our lives but an invitation for the journey through the
wilderness sustained by his Love and Grace.
Yesterday, my Sunday School class went to the Church on the Slab in Fort Worth, TX. This Christian ministry provides food, clothing, water and spiritual guidance to the homeless and working poor in this area of Texas. As I talked with some of those who came and waited patiently for help, I felt that surely their lives were not "the will of God!" However, every person who came was so grateful - even when we didn't have the right size of shoes or any blankets left to distribute. The lives of these people are much more of an adventure than anyone would choose. Nevertheless, I DO believe that God WAS PRESENT in that place with the volunteers, the pastor, and every single person who came. I pray that they, too, felt our Lord's Presence.

Who Am I REALLY Trying to Please?
Today's scriptures and devotional are so "refreshing!" They make it
clear that we can try have a choice: to try to meet the many expectations and please those
around us - or relax in the Presence of our Lord. As I read these words,
I began thinking about all the time I have wasted trying to please
others rather than taking that time to enjoy God's Peace and love.
The scripture from Philippians 4 is one of my favorites. It gives me the reassurance that I don't have to worry - even though I often forget that Promise! I cherish the thought that "...the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Do you ever feel that God is truly "guarding" your mind and heart? It is only through the "Spirit of the Living God," that He will fill us with His Peace. I hope that you listen to and read the words of this beautiful hymn during your worship time today.

God's Most Amazing Grace!
I praise God for letting us know that "...there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." That is why I immediately thought of "Amazing Grace." I hope that you have time to listen carefully to the words of this beautiful old spiritual hymn. (Click on his name if you want to know more about John Newton who wrote the words to this hymn in 1772.)
In today's reading, Sarah Young wrote some powerful words about being distracted by all the "voices" telling us to "Do this!" "Don't do that!" "Pray this way!", etc. What are other voices that we are all faced with in today's rush, rush world?
Which of today's scriptures spoke most clearly to you? They are all powerful when we accept what our Lord has done for us and take the time to listen for HIS voice!

Fog or Focus?
What a blessing to read today's devotional and scriptures about God's
Promise to guide us - and hold us by His hand! I had never before
thought about some of the words in today's reading regarding our Lord
placing a "peaceful fog" around our path that allows us to see only a
few steps in front of us. This is when we turn our attention to God's
Presence with us. I look forward to the day when I won't need that "fog"
but will keep my focus on our Lord at all times!
I have posted two beautiful Christian songs on earlier blogs: "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" and "I'll Never Let Go of Your Hand." How to "Handle" Life's Troubles!
When I started reading this devotional, I immediately thought of the gospel song, "Take Your Burden to the Lord and Leave It There." I pray that you enjoy beginning today's worship time by focusing on these lyrics.
There is no doubt that "You will always face trouble in this life" as Sarah Young reminds us in today's reading. I finally have realized that it's what we call LIFE! The big question is, "How do we handle those troubles?" As I look back on my life, I see far too many times that I tried to handle things myself. I always liked to think of myself as very independent, which is nothing but a fallacy! The older I get the more I realize that God is with me in all situations, even though He does not always handle things the way I tell Him to! I thank Him daily for His Presence in all things and that He will help me face all of life's troubles. I especially appreciate Jesus' Promise in this regard from John 16:33: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace..."
What is the first thing you typically do when troubles come along or you think they are going to come? My ideas of "What if..." often cause such worry, but most of those "What if's?" don't materialize. Please share any thoughts and/or spiritual practices that might help me and other readers.

God's Spirit Lives in Us!
Today's reading and scriptures are blessed reminders of what happens when we allow God's Spirit to truly live within us. It
seems so simple! However, I know I make life more difficult by being
too busy or distracted to let that happen! God's Spirit is available to
change me, guide me, and help me - if only I will give Him space in my
life!
Please share with me and others what ways that you use to continually walk with His Spirit in your life.
The words of this beautiful Christian hymn, "Pour Out Your Spirit on Me" reinforced for me today's devotional reading and scriptures. As I listened to these words, I felt like God WAS pouring His Spirit on me. I pray that you will share in that blessing.

Hope in the Lord!
It seems that we all need hope to survive life's many up's and
down's! I may have previously shared the story of my father at the
time that the doctor said would be his last hours on earth (though Dad did live a few
months longer). We asked the hospital chaplain to try to talk with him early the next morning - even
though he had been unconscious all night. When the chaplain asked my
father (a non-church-goer) about his faith, my dad opened his eyes and
said, "My only hope is in the Lord." This reassurance is what my family
needed to give us peace when my father passed from this earth to be with our Lord.
Today's scripture from Romans 15:13 spoke so clearly about the hope that our Lord promises us: "...that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound and be overflowing (bubbling over) with hope." Can you imagine life bubbling over with that hope that our Lord can give us?
Do you have stories to share about giving or receiving hope - and how it has changed your life or the life of someone you know?

Are You Living an "Abundant Life?"
What does it mean to you to hear the term "abundance?" The first
thought that comes to mind for most of us is financial abundance or
having lots of "things." However, as I re-read and prayed over these scripture passages, I have come to believe that abundance has a
far greater meaning.
Regarding the passage from Luke 11, I do believe that my requests have to be in line with God's Will before he answers them the way I ask; i.e., I don't think I will get a Porsche tomorrow because I ask for one tonight! I also believe that I and many others are far-more blessed than we take time to realize! That goes back to previous blogs about becoming more aware of God's Presence in ALL times and things.
In John 10:10, it says, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (King James Version) Surely Jesus meant something different than our present-day thinking. Different Bible interpretations say it a little more clearly:
"The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflow)." (Amplified Version)
John 10:6-10: Jesus told this simple story, but they had no idea what he was talking about. So he tried again. “I’ll be explicit, then. I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good—sheep stealers, every one of them. But the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture. A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of." (The Message)
Do you feel so blessed that your "cup is running over?" Please share your thoughts on "abundance" and what it means for you and others you know.

Strength - For Every Day!
What blessed reassurance of God's Promise to give us strength for
whatever our new day entails! I will cling to the thought that "As your day, so shall your strength be." Of
course, as previous devotionals have told us, a part of what happens
depends on us - looking to our Lord for whatever is our need and seeking
His Presence in all things.
In one of my Bible study groups, we have talked a lot about making our "God-do-this-please" list! I'll admit that I want to tell our Lord how to run things in this world! However, we know that God doesn't always give us exactly what we ask, but He DOES REMAIN WITH US! I praise Him for this most powerful Promise!
During today's reading, I was reminded of the powerful old (1873) hymn, "Blessed Assurance." When listening to the words, I realized that we need that assurance as much today as back 140 years ago! I pray that these lyrics may bless you as they have me during today's worship time.

Who/What Molds Our Minds?
As an educator, I have been concerned for many years about the
effects of the media on the minds of our children and grandchildren -
and all humankind! Medical and educational research tells us that the
shape of the brain is actually being "reshaped" because of our constant
use/influence of the media. What's most alarming is the kind of violence
that is portrayed on television or played on computer games. Many
children and adults spend 5-10 hours per day (150-300 hours per month)
being inundated with violence! It can't be any big surprise when even
very young people commit random acts of violence!
Today's powerful reading reminds us that God can and will mold our minds - if we allow Him to. What would our world be like if we spent only a few hours a day studying God's Word, praying to Him, and quietly listening for His Word and Will for our lives?
Today during my worship time, I listened to the old hymn, "Take My Life and Let it Be." This arrangement is by Chris Tomlin and uses the original lyrics but also adds some that reinforce the meaning of these words. I pray that these words speak to you the way they have to me as I seek to "let go and let God" take over my life.

What To Do With "Future-Oriented Worry!"
I somehow think that God is speaking today especially to me (since
its my birthday) and all the other Christians who continue to be
"worriers!" The words that were so refreshing to me in today's reading
were those telling us to suffuse/fill God's Light and Presence into our
worry-thoughts. Of course, Jesus' words about worry from Luke and other
gospels are so direct and clear that there is no way to misunderstand!
In today's devotional, Sarah Young especially refers to "future-oriented worries." I pray that you will join me in stopping to look at our worries to discern which are real and which are things that might happen in the future.
Everyone has worries and concerns at various times in our lives. How do you cope with worry? Please share your thoughts with me and other readers who are seeking to get rid of that lifelong "worry habit."

God DOES "Raise Us Up!"
Today's reading reminded me so much of the the words of Paul in Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." As
I look back on my life (as today's devotional suggests), I see that
there were so many times that there was no way that I could have handled
things by myself. What a wonderful reminder of specific ways that we
have to cope with life's many ups and downs:
- our relationship with our Lord;
- His Promises in Scripture;
- and looking back at our Lord's help in the past.

How Do I Worship God - In ALL THINGS?
Today's devotional seems to reinforce the one a few days ago on being
content. Sarah Young's words that spoke most clearly to me are "Instead
of grasping and controlling, you are learning to release and receive."
One of my spiritual mentors from a Bible study group used to talk about what she would do when life looked more difficult than she could handle. She said she would pray and pray - and then "let go and let God." She was one of the most joyful persons I ever knew - even in the face of serious illness for herself and her family. She was the kind of person who was an inspiration to others. This made me start wondering, "Am I an inspiration to anyone, especially regarding being able to release my cares to my Lord as part of my daily worship?"
What about you? Are you able to let go and let God? Are you able to worship Him in all things? I hope that we have time to dwell and pray on this today.

Am I Pleasing God?
I feel a bit challenged by today's reading about "pleasing God in all
things!" I certainly want to please God in little and big things, but
many times my humanity takes over and I'm sure that I let Him down. I am
constantly looking for His guidance through prayer, Bible study,
church, and the help of pastors and other Christians. However, my
understanding is that only Jesus is Perfect and that I don't need to
"beat up" on myself when I am far less than perfect. Instead, I thank
God for His loving kindness - and especially His forgiveness!
How do you feel about how well you are pleasing God?

Human Nature vs. God's Nature
I think it is human nature to "feel happy when things are going well,
and sad or frustrated when things don't turn out as they'd hoped" - or
at least that is my nature. In looking in the thesaurus for the word contentment, I was a bit surprised to see that some of the synonyms that showed up are: happiness, satisfaction, pleasure. What a blessing to be reminded in today's reading and scriptures that with the help of our Lord, we can overcome
our human nature and be happy, satisfied and filled with contentment. .
The passage from Philippians 4:12 especially spoke to me: "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation."
The idea that we can live as close to our Lord as we choose puts responsibility on us. I can choose to trust in the Lord and know that He takes care of me - or not. This reminds me of the beautiful hymn, "God Will Take Care of You." I hope you enjoy these encouraging words; they are especially meaningful knowing that these young ladies live in an orphanage.

Walking In Peace!
In our hurried, busy world, walking in peace seems to be
wishful-thinking! Today's reading and scriptures are so powerful in
reminding us that we really CAN go through even the most-demanding times
in Peace. However, there is one requirement - keep our mind on the Presence of our Lord.
What are some of the ways that you get through stressful times? One of mine is find relevant scriptures or do a computer-Bible search (such as on biblegateway.com). In addition to today's passages and devotional, one of my favorites is John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." A beautiful old hymn that is also a comfort is, "It Is Well With My Soul." Please share your thoughts on keeping God's peace in spite of our many difficulties and challenges in life.

What Happens When We Are Disappointed?
Disappointments come to everyone at one time or another in life! We
all need encouragement at these times and today's reading provided
meaningful thoughts to which we can hold. I especially appreciate some of Sarah Young's words: "When you reframe setbacks as opportunities, you find that you gain much more than you have lost."
The scriptures from Colossians and Philippians are such wonderful reminders of what is important in life - prayer and knowing Christ as our Lord and Savior! As I was reading these passages, I began thinking of the hymn, "Count Your Blessings" and a few words from it: When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged thinking all is lost...These words continue to comfort me as I change my focus to blessings instead of disappointments, hurts, challenges.
Please share other scriptures and/or Christian songs that help you get through some of life's struggles and disappointments.

Grow Strong - Even in Our Weakness!
Today's reading and scriptures remind me of another passage that has been powerful in my life. I had read it many times but it wasn't until a few years ago that it really touched my heart:
"My grace is sufficient for you. My power is made perfect in weakness."
As the aging process continues, I find myself "weak" - physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually - in many situations. What a blessed promise that through these times I can still grow strong in the Lord!
Do you know of scriptures or Christian music that have been meaningful to you in times of weakness?

Keeping Our Focus On Our Lord
I often get frustrated at myself when my focus isn't on God but on worldly things - even though I have been taught to do better. This reminds me of times when my children were young and did something foolish - after being taught differently. - I still loved them as our Lord still loves us!
Today's reading reminds us that we have Jesus who intercedes for us - and will "sympathize with our weaknesses." After all, He has gone through much greater temptations than we can imagine! Other words that especially spoke to me in today's devotional are "Each time you plow your way through the massive distractions to communicate with Me (God), you achieve a victory."
As I was reading today's devotional and scriptures, I thought of the beautiful old hymn, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus." What a blessed reminder for us to keep our eyes, heart and mind focused on Him.I praise God for the most Precious Gift of His Son who is our Helper and loves us no matter what!

God is With Us - On Holy Ground!
Many times when I am teaching a Bible study class or even talking to a
good friend about spiritual issues, I am at a loss as to how to
respond. Today's reading is such a good reminder that we can have the
help of God's Spirit in times like these - when people open their heart
and souls to us. I had never thought about these times being ones in
which we are "on holy ground!" Today might be a good time to listen
again to the beautiful words of the hymn, "Holy Ground."
Do you have other scriptures or hymns to share that serve as a reminder of God's Presence on "holy ground?"

Is My Mind "Earthbound?"
Today's devotional is similar to the one a few days ago in which the names Jesus, and Emmanuel were discussed. This is another reminder to continually seek God's Presence by keeping our minds focused on Him rather than being "earthbound!" We are assured in the scripture from Jeremiah that we will find Him when we search for Him with all our heart.
I appreciate Sarah Young's words that "Quietness is the classroom where you learn to hear my voice." I pray that we all find time for that classroom! "Sweet Hour of Prayer." that I used in today's time of worship/classroom; I pray that it will speak to you as it did to me.
God is with me! God is with me! I praise Him for this most wonderful blessing!

How to Start the Day!
Today's scripture from Ephesians spoke especially to me: "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works." I'm
not sure that every minute of today is planned out by God - but I do
believe that He knows what will happen. I also believe that He gave us
free will to make choices about constantly seeking His Presence and
guidance. I think that's why starting the day with Him is so very
important! What is your opinion on God's will for your life?
In recent months, I have written about taking time for "silence and solitude" with our Lord. Our usual prayer time is when we ask God to do what we think He needs to do for us and others. However, the times of silence and solitude are ones in which we listen intentionally for the guidance of God. My spiritual director recently told me that she CANNOT start her day without that special quiet time with God. How do you start your days - and does it seem to make a difference in how the day goes for you?

Life Isn't Always Fair!
In a recent Bible study class, one of our lessons was relating to
dealing with "challenging" people - whether in our family, work,
church, neighborhood, etc. Sometimes people may say things that are
untrue, unfair and undeserved! We call that life since
it probably happens to everyone at one time or another! The
recommendation in the Bible study and in today's devotional was to try
to view these times as "opportunities to grow!" Today's reading
says to "grow in grace" - which is giving and receiving undeserved
love. In the Bible study class, the reading suggested that we tell
ourselves that "School is in session," or to be ready to grow and learn
from these unfair, difficult experiences.
What a blessing to be reminded that what is important in life is not what others think, but rather what our Lord thinks! I praise Him for the understanding that His ways are Peace and Love which is poured into our hearts by His Spirit!
Do you have ways to that you use to deal with those unfair, difficult times in life? Please share with others as we all need help in this area.

God's Instructions
Today's scripture passage from Psalm 32:8 is one that changed my
life. When I was trying to make a major decision about retirement from
public education, I kept praying for God's guidance to show me the right
path in this critical time in my life. One morning I sat down to
breakfast and randomly opened my Bible. This is one of the scriptures
that spoke clearly to me as my eyes were somehow led to the one from Psalms 32. The
other scripture that I was led to that morning was Proverbs 16:3 - "Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will be established." I have never regretted the decision I made on that day.
Do you have favorite scriptures that have spoken to you in times of decision? Please share your stories with other readers as some may be needing guidance from God's Word in making major life decisions.

God is the Vine; We ARE His Branches!
The words in today's devotional reading and scripture made me think
of broken branches lying on the ground after a storm. The scripture
passage from John made me realize that I probably have been like broken
branches during some of life's storms when I tried to take care of
everything on my own - without being connected to my Lord.
Words from the hymn, "Have Thine Own Way Lord," came to mind as I read today's scriptures and words of Sarah Young:
Have thine own way, Lord, Have thin own way.
Thou art the potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me, after Thy Will.
While I am waiting, yielded and still.
A vine can't grow branches without being connected to them. A potter can't mold clay without holding on to it. Our Lord can only mold us and guide us by our holding on to Him and by Him holding on to us. The last line of this verse (above) reminds us how that can be done - by waiting, yielding, and being still! I praise God for His reassurance that He is our Vine and our Potter!
Please share with me and others how you hold on to our Lord - and ways that you know He is holding on to you.

There's Something About the Name "Jesus"
Many times in the past, I have heard the meaning of the word, Emmanuel, especially
around Christmas. However, I don't think I fully "got" the meaning
until today's devotional reading. For whatever reason (maybe His
Spirit), when I focused on the power of Emmanuel, "God with me," I
felt overwhelmed by His Presence. I hope and pray that this new
understanding and acceptance of these words will stay with me for all of
my life.
Sarah Young also explains another meaning of His Name: Jesus. I have to admit that I was unaware that this word literally means "the Lord saves!" Putting these two names together then says to us: God is with us and will save us! I praise God!
Did any of the words in today's reading or scripture make you feel overwhelmed or awed by His Presence?
On an earlier blog, someone sent in the beautiful hymn, "Jesus, Jesus, There's Something About That Name." I used it in my worship time again today as it is such a wonderful reminder of Jesus - Emmanuel!

God's Restoring Peace Through Rest
In today's devotional, Sarah Young writes that God "built into your very being the need for rest." She continues about how "twisted the world has become when people feel guilty about meeting this basic need." For
some reason, these words spoke clearly to me since I DO feel guilty
about spending time resting! When friends ask me "What have you been
doing?" I often stammer with guilt because I am unable to list the 101
things I did last week!
This devotional reading and scriptures said to me that
This devotional reading and scriptures said to me that
- It's o.k. to rest.
- Even God needed rest when He created the earth.
- It is only through resting in and with Him that we can find His Peace.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus!
Today's devotional seems to be an addition to yesterday's - on the
subject of joy attained through the Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Words from "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" immediately came to mind as I
thought about some of the words from today's readings regarding the
Light of God's Presence on and in us. Here are a few lines from this
beautiful old hymn:
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There's a light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
The words and music provided a blessed worship experience for me as I hope it will for you: "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus."
Do you have a story to share about a time when you found Jesus in your presence when you most needed Him?

Choose Joy!
Have you ever wished for more joy in your life? I'll have to admit
that sometimes I feel that way. I have also heard that comment
from some older friends who have no family nearby and who have multiple
health issues. Today's devotional is such a blessing in reminding us
that God's Presence and Companionship "can infuse Joy into the grayest day!" I appreciate the scripture and also Sarah Young's words that sometimes we have to search for that joy "as for hidden treasure."
I have recently mentioned about a book and video lessons by Kay Warren called, Choose Joy! In these lessons, she talks about "parallel times" in our lives. On the one side is the good things: God, family, friends, church, house to live, food to eat, etc. On the other side are the worries and fears: health, money, family members, our country, safety, etc. However, we can "choose joy" at anytime when God's Presence is with us and when we know that He is guiding our steps.
Today's reading and scripture reminded me of a wonderful song that children often learn in Sunday School. Even though it's written for children, it's one of those that might change a gloomy day to a bright one for children and adults. I hope that you enjoy this delightful video of "I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Down in My Heart".
How do you face trials and challenging times but yet keep joy in your life and heart?

What We Can Do When We Are Angry or Resentful!
Several months ago, I went to my family doctor who told me that I
seemed angry. I was shocked! I didn't think I was angry, but became so
concerned about his comment that I went to one of my pastors to discuss
the issue. I have had quite a few "ups and downs" in recent
years, and the pastor began having me talk about some of these events.
By the time our conversation was over, I realized that I had shown signs
of anger without realizing it. She helped me bring these feelings to the surface and begin taking them to my Lord so that He could free me from such feelings.
Today's devotional and scriptures are good reminders that life causes us to have some resentful feelings (and some of anger) that are often hidden from our conscious mind. What is important is for us to ask God to show us these feelings so that we can bring them to Him - and be freed from them!
The last sentence in the devotional reminded me once more of the hymn, "I'll Never Let God of Your Hand." What a blessing to realize and accept this Promise of our Lord.

Live Life Abundantly!
Words in today's reading about "gravity and the inevitable effects of
aging" spoke clearly to me - since no matter how old we are, we ARE in
the aging process! What blessed reassurance that even when we are aging outwardly, we can grow inwardly
stronger if we simply "walk in the light" by staying near to our Lord!
The lyrics to the hymn, "Teach Me to Walk in the Light" is a beautiful prayer. I pray that you enjoy it during today's worship time.
What are some things that you do on a daily basis to ensure that you stay in His Light?

Practicing God's Presence - Even in Church!
I remember when my children were little and I would be fussing (and
sometimes yelling) to hurry up and get ready for church. I imagine they
thought their mother was the one who really needed church and God's Peace and Presence!
Sarah Young's words in today's devotional were certainly "poignant" for most of us! I know that at times it takes real effort to put on my "Sunday smiles" if things aren't going just right. I need this reminder that my purpose in going to church is to commune with my Lord. When that happens, I will be able to love others with God's Love.
The scripture from Philippians 4 has always been meaningful to me. I decided it needs to be one of those that I memorize in order that I can focus on it many times a day. What a wonderful reminder of all the good things that we should be thinking about - those things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. What would churches look like if every person who entered the doors did that one thing?

Have a "Gentle Day!"
I like the idea of going "gently" through the day! It seems that for
me and most of my friends, the days are anything but gentle! However, today's devotional reminds us that we can have gentle days by keeping our eyes focused on our Lord.
The scripture from John especially spoke to me; in it Jesus refers to Himself as the good shepherd. I don't know a lot about shepherding except that they will do most anything to protect their sheep. What a blessing to know that Jesus is our Good Shepherd and is watching over us. However, it is our job to stay aware of Him and His Presence - in spite of the "busy trap" world!
What good habits do you have to help you remain aware of the Presence of our Lord - even in those rough patches of life?

What Will It Be: Worry or Prayer?
I once heard a pastor identify worry as allowing our mind to dwell on
difficulties or troubles - either real or perceived or imagined. Sarah
Young gives an interesting definition of anxiety which is brought on by
worry: "Anxiety is a result of envisioning the future without God." I
have never before thought about worry and anxiety in light of these
particular words. I pray that God will use these words in helping me
break this "lack of faith" called worry!
Today's scripture from Luke is so clear on this issue that likely affects most people in the world some of the time - or even all of the time! We are reminded again that we have a choice of worry or prayer. What do you do to combat the worry habit?

God's Presence - His Most Wonderful Gift!
Today's devotional reading and scriptures are wonderful reminders of
God's greatest gift - His Presence with us in our joys and sorrows. The
scripture from 2 Corinthians adds a very special element to this Gift of
His. It tells us that God "comforts us in all
our troubles, SO THAT WE CAN COMFORT THOSE IN ANY TROUBLE WITH THE
COMFORT WE OURSELVES HAVE RECEIVED FROM GOD."
Does the power of that passage speak to anyone else besides me? It makes it so clear that we ARE to share God's Love and Compassion with others by being His hands and feet and mouth here on earth!
I focused on some of the words in the hymn, "Take Time to Be Holy" that were especially meaningful in my devotional/worship time today:
Take time to be holy, Speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in him always, and feed on His Word;
Make friends of God's children, Help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing, His blessing to seek.
I pray that you have time to focus on these beautiful words and music along with today's scriptures as you strive to walk closer to our Lord.

Running the Race by Staying Focused!
I know very little about running in a race except that you lose a lot
of speed and direction by trying to see what the others are doing. I
think that is what these scriptures and devotional are referring to - to
keep our eyes focused on our Lord rather than watching what others are
doing. In this "busy trap" kind of world, that's a tough commitment!
I have mentioned before the words in a beautiful hymn, "I'll Never Let Go of Your Hand." I praise God for His assurance that He won't let go of me even during the times that I lose my focus on Him. I pray that the lyrics of this hymn will speak to you as they have to me. Also, please share with me and others any scriptures or Christian songs that relate to today's powerful devotional.

Allow God to Use Our Struggles - and Bring About Good!
It is sometimes very difficult to find joy in problems and pain! If
you are like me, you may at times feel that you have gained enough
"perseverance" from the testing of faith as in today's scripture passage from James 1:2-4! However, the devotional and scriptures are good reminders that God can and will bring good out of our
trials and pain in life - IF we only offer it up to Him for His
purposes.
In addition to today's scriptures, the one from Romans 8:28 is a powerful reminder of this Promise of our Lord: 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. It doesn't say that God has brought these trials and challenges on us, but it does say that He can and will use them for good.
I thank our Lord for His Promises of being with us and using the good and bad times for His Will and Way!

Be Still and Listen!
It is only in recent years that I have heard and read about the importance of taking time to BE STILL IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD. I
have always been pretty faithful about my prayer time, but it typically
consisted of me telling God what I think He should do! Now I realize
that I need to just clear my mind and listen to what He has to say to
me. This usually starts with a short "breath prayer" such as "Abide in
me," or "Jesus," or "Peace in; worry out," as I take deep breaths.
Another option is to start by reading a short verse of meaningful
scripture and focus on those words. When the anxious thoughts or worries
try to take over, just send them away like "leaves floating down a
stream."
I have previously mentioned a wonderful book that I have been studying and teaching:
Invitation to Solitude and Silence: Experiencing God's Transforming Presence by Ruth Haley Barton. It has greatly enhanced understanding for me and other class members of the "Why?" and also the "How?" of being still with the Lord and listening for His guidance.
The hymn "Be Still My Soul," has powerful lyrics that help us focus on the fact that "The Lord is on my side." I pray that it will speak to you as it has to me in today's worship time.

Who Am I Trying to Please or Impress?
I've always thought it was strange that some people really seem to
like me - while others really do not! I'm the kind who has always wanted
to please everyone around me - family, neighbors, church friends, etc. I
get quite upset when I realize that I am not pleasing to some of those
around me.
Today's devotional made me think about this desire to please people on earth in a different way - that in some ways it "dampens" our desire to please our Lord! What a good reminder that our goal should be to try to see ourselves through the eyes of our Loving God and receive His Peace. This isn't likely to happen if we spend our time trying to do what others want and to please them.
I pray that you will take time to enjoy the beautiful words of "Have Thine Own Way." It is a wonderful prayer/hymn. If you have other hymns or scriptures about worshipping our lord "in spirit and in truth," please share with me and other readers.

God's Most Precious Gift
A scripture that particularly spoke to me today was the first part of the one from Psalm 62: "Find
rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him. He alone is my
rock and my salvation; He is my fortress; I will not be shaken." The
reason that this passage holds such special meaning is that some of
those words were spoken by my dad, a non-church goer, to a hospital
chaplain as Dad lay near death. His passing became much easier for
all of our family as we were reminded of Dad's words, "My only hope is
in the Lord."
Another closely related scripture is from Romans 8:38-39: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be
able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our
Lord." This scripture along with today's devotional are blessed reminders of God's most precious gift - His Presence with us!
Do
you have scriptures that you hold near as reminders that the most
important gift in life CANNOT BE LOST? Please share with me and other
readers.

What Is My Choice - Trying to Control or Trust?
Today's reading caused me to think about how often I try to control
so many things in my life - and how frustrating it gets after awhile! I
try to blame it on the fact that I was a teacher and a principal for so
many years, and I thought I needed to have control of my classroom or
school. It seems that I would have learned a lesson long ago that in
schools and churches and businesses and life, no matter how hard we try, control cannot happen on a consistent basis!
Some of Sarah Young's words particularly spoke to me about trusting God enough to "let things happen without striving to predict or control them. Relax, and refresh yourself..." Additionally, she wrote, "The alternative is to live fully in the present, depending on Me (God) each moment."
I have mentioned previously about a friend writing a new book called, In Touch With Now: An Uncommon Celebration. A part of the author's (Rev. Patsy Brundige) description of the book reiterates some the meaning of today's devotional, "We are shocked and disappointed, realizing what we have missed. Newly discovered simplicity and beauty lead us to an uncommon celebration of our common everydayness."
I have asked myself again, "Am I living in the NOW by trusting in God's Presence and enjoying His daily blessings, or am I trying to control/predict tomorrow or next week or next year?" What about you?
