Too Busy for Our Lord

My friends and I often discuss all the distractions going on in the world and all the choices we have to make - each and everyday! Examples might be as simple as buying a tube of toothpaste (with at least 150 choices) to selecting a TV channel to watch (I have the basic package with only about 150 channels)!! Sarah Young uses the term "overstimulation of the senses" in describing our present time.

When I was reading today's devotional, I started thinking about sitting in front of God and responding to His questions such as "How much time did you spend with me each and everyday?" That's a disconcerting thought and one that got my attention!

How do we ever have times to see those "unseen" things that our Lord has before us in such a busy, overstimulated world? What are some things that we can do to ensure that "buffer of silence" around us?

  1. Pat, I think it starts early in the morning. Before we check our phones, before we turn on the TV, before we turn on the radio, before our feet hit the ground. We need to take time for Him. Also, so many times when we are driving we need to talk to someone or have the radio on. It's sometimes nice to just have that quiet time where God can speak to us, guide our thoughts, etc. By memorizing scripture we are filled with the vocabulary of the holy spirit, and in our time of need, we are reminded of these verses. We've become so attuned to having the world fill our thoughts. But making time to let God fill our thoughts allows us to have a deeper relationship with Him.
Besides starting the day with him, we can close the day with him. I took the TV out of my bedroom. I found that I was using the TV to fall asleep to. I was watching "Stupid tv" late into the evenings when I needed to spend more time reading his word, and being silent with Him.
