When Things Don't Go As we Would Like...! Questions - To Your Right>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

In recent day, things have not gone as I would like - or think - or imagine! I have previously mentioned some on-going health issues. These really showed themselves in unpleasant and "disagreeable" ways in the past week! I ended out in the hospital on all sorts of intravenous medicines along with being poked, prodded and scanned. However, I will have to admit the love and care from my local hospital by every doctor, nurse, tech, etc., was extremely supportive. In addition, numerous friends showed up to help with my needs (including a lot of prayer) during this unexpected hospital visit.

After the initial shock, I began counting blessings. I'm guessing that only a few years ago, I would not have the privilege of having the use of such modern drugs, equipment and medical staff! The calls, texts, visits and emails from family and friends were/are overwhelming! I especially praise God for His Holy Presence and Peace that remains with me about this most recent challenge!

Today's devotional helps me focus on the thought of trying to see things through the eyes of our Lord. What a blessing that would be!

Some of Sarah Young's words in today's reading reminded me of the first verse of the Serenity Prayer, written by Reinhold Niebuhr, an American theologian:
      God grant me the serenity
      to accept the things I cannot change;
      courage to change the things I can;
      and wisdom to know the difference. 

 I pray that He will grant me this kind of Wisdom and Peace throughout all the days of my life.

Another praise for my Lord is His Promise that He is "the way and the truth and the life." It is up to us to keep our eyes focused on Him - no matter what is happening in the world or in our own lives. I have previously referred to the beautiful hymn, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" but it spoke again today in my  worship time and I pray that it will for you as we turn together with our eyes focused on Him.

Our Choices - Our Habits or God's Guidance!

The way I understand today's devotional reading and scriptures is that I/we have a choice about life - to continue with our habits or open ourselves to God's guidance and ways. For me, habits are easier to follow - even though they may not be good ones. It takes time and self-discipline to stand in God's Presence and allow Him to take control of our lives. In a book I read on silence and solitude, there was a focus on trusting God enough to give to Him our cares and worries in order that we can take the time to spend alone with Him.

From the time I first became a Christian, I think I must have believed that something "magic" would happen! I thought that since I knew I was a Christian and joined the church, I would gradually come closer to God and become more like Him. I now believe that can only happen by my commitment to spend time with my Lord. The words in the hymn, "Take Time To Be Holy," are good reminders of the need for this time. I pray that you will join me in making time for God a top priority everyday of life.

Solitude and Silence

As I have recently mentioned, I have been learning more about the importance of practicing spiritual disciplines - focusing in particular on silence and solitude. Today's devotional is a good reminder of the value of sitting quietly (in silence and solitude) in God's Presence. It is only through this kind of time with our Lord that we can begin to understand His great Love and "the fullness of My (God's) glorious riches."

The beautiful hymn, "We are Standing on Holy Ground" has repeatedly blessed me as I listen to the words. They tell us that when we stand in the Presence of our Lord, we ARE on HOLY GROUND. I pray that we will be blessed and joyful as we listen to this hymn in our worship time today as we stand on holy ground with Him!

Lord, Here I Am!

In yesterday's blog, I mentioned the recent discussion about a desire to spend time with our Lord. Another part of that discussion was when we talked about the need to totally TRUST God with all our fears, cares and troubles. I pray that today we will stand before Him and trust Him to lead us in the way we should go.

Spending Time With Our Lord!

In a recent Bible study group, we were discussing our DESIRE to spend time with our Lord. However, we also discussed that it is sometimes challenging to spend that time in our busy, rush-rush world. As written in today's devotional, we may be filled with guilt at spending so much time with our Lord when we think we "should/could be" working at our job, taking care of our home, visiting with friends, watching television, working or playing on the computer or phone, etc. It's times like these that we need to talk to God and ask for His help and guidance.

I read recently in a pastor's writing that becoming closer to our Lord and becoming more like Him is like getting better at anything. It takes PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!  It doesn't just happen magically by itself!

I pray that you will join me in spending more time with our Lord and telling Him that "Here I Am, Lord!" This is a beautiful hymn for our worship time today.

God's Power Comes Through Our Weakness

I'm not sure that I like to be called "weak" as in today's devotional! However, in reality, I know that I have always been weak and looking to God for strength.

I am reading a book about spiritual growth through spending time in "solitude and silence." It repeatedly discusses the importance of letting go of our fears and weaknesses - and giving them all to God. In this way, we can say to our Lord, "Here I am - including every part of me. I'm awaiting more of your Presence, Power, and Love in my life."

Today's scripture from 2 Corinthians 12:9 is one that I've referred to several times in this blog. What a blessing to know that God's Power "is made perfect in weakness."

Do I REALLY Trust God?

Today's scripture passages continue to be powerful ones in my life. In the passage from I Peter, we are reminded to "humble" ourselves so that we can be lifted up when God is ready to do so. In today's world where power, money, and prestige are sought by so many, this command can only be "lived" by being intentional in not considering ourselves greater than others.

There have been several devotional readings and scriptures on giving thanks in ALL circumstances. I heard a pastor recently giving a sermon on this topic. The way he explained this was that we CAN give thanks in all circumstances - that God is with us no matter what is going on in our lives and in the world. We can do this through our trust in our Lord; we then will be able to  attain His Love, Peace, and Presence.

I may have previously posted the link to "Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart". However, the lyrics to this beautiful hymn have touched me time and again - as I pray they do for you in your worship time today.

R & R For Our Souls!

After I re-read today's devotional, my understanding of it is this:  Quit trying to help and bless others by myself. Instead, ask God for His Presence as I reach out to others. Then, take time to "rest in the Lord." After all, Jesus had to do the same - rest and be restored. In addition, I came to a better understanding of relating to others through God's love rather than my own since my love is so limited.

The scripture from Matthew 11:28-29 has always spoken to me in a powerful way: "Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest..."  I know that many Christians do suffer from "burnout" or "drainout" as we interact with many people with great needs. This scripture is such a blessing that we can find rest for our souls through the Love of our Lord!

Life Without Worry!!

Can you imagine how life would be like without ever worrying or being anxious? Today's scripture passage from Philippians 4 is a wonderful reminder that God does NOT want us to be anxious about anything. Along with that, we are told to thank our Lord in all situations. That is how we are given His Peace and Guidance.

I pray that you will share with me and others how you keep God's Peace in your life at all times. To me, this is a lifetime challenge!

What To Do For Stress!

I don't imagine there is anyone on Earth who has not felt the stresses of life! I've had many of those days - but often for trivial reasons. I often find myself rushing because I know that I'm about to be late for an appointment or a meeting - but suddenly receive telephone calls in which people needed my time. When I notice that I am to the point of having shaking hand, I try to STOP and seek God's guidance.

I've mentioned previously about striving to become more engaged in some of the spiritual disciplines that I know will bring me closer to my Lord. I was just re-reading about the disciplines of silence and solitude. I turned in my chair to look out at the magnificent spring flowers in my atrium. I took a few deep breaths and said a simple breath prayer: "Peace."  After repeating that phrase a few times, I tried to empty my mind of my trivial stresses and sat quietly for a few minutes with God. When I returned to my tasks at hand, I did have God's Peace and I was able to do everything I needed - in a minimal amount of time.

I pray that you will join me in practicing some of the spiritual disciplines. The ones of silence and solitude are supposedly good ones to start with - but they do take practice to begin to really feel God's Presence. I will include some specific steps for these disciplines in the coming days, and you may have some to share with me and other readers.

Let's Learn From Our Mistakes!

I really appreciate the thought that mistakes are o.k. in the eyes of God! As an educator for many years, that's something I used to tell my students - that it's through making mistakes that we can "learn to do it better the next time." Sarah Young's words in today's devotional are ones that I have heard and believe - but also ones of which I need reminded. "Because you are human, you will continue to make mistakes."

One element of joy that I gained from this reading is the scripture from Romans 8:28. - To me, this means that God will take my mistakes and other bad things in my life and bring good from them! Praise God!

Be Ready for the Day's Troubles!

I thank God for words in today's devotional which remind us that GOD WILL NEVER LET GO OF OUR HAND! There's no doubt that life gives all of us troubles - even though it seems that some have many more than others! The blessing is that we have the Promise of God's continuing Presence.

I pray that the words in the song, "I'll Never Let Go of Your Hand" will reassure you as it has me that God is with me no matter what happens in life!

There's No Other Way - But to Trust and Obey!

What blessed reassurance are the words of Sarah Young in today's devotional. - "If you learn to TRUST Me (God)-really trust Me--with your whole being, then nothing can separate you from my Peace." As I was reading this, it saddened me that my trust in our Lord must waiver at times since I still do worry and get upset about many of life's challenges.

We are constantly reminded about the importance of spending quiet time alone with God. It is through this time of meditation that we are able to quit asking Him to do many things that we think He needs to do. Rather, this is when we can open ourselves to Him and listen for His Word and Will. This is also a time that we can re-affirm our trust in God and attain His Peace. I pray that we will make it a top priority to spend time in silence and solitude with our Lord each and every day.

I also pray that today in your worship time you will focus on the words of the old hymn, "Trust and Obey." I truly believe that there is no other way to "be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey." How do you remain in "total trust" of our Lord?

Do We Try to Be In Control?

I often hear people talk about other family members and/or friends who try very hard to be in control  of the lives of most people around them! I say to myself, "I'm so glad that I'm not that kind of person," but in truth, I will have to admit that I want to be that "super controller!" If only...would do this, I think they would have a better life! If I don't say it, I often think those words!

The lines of today's devotional that especially spoke to me were, "The harder you try (to gain control of your life), the more frustrated you become." It is up to us to keep our eyes on our Lord and let Him be in control of our lives - and He will give us the security and Peace that we are striving for.

Come Before the Lord With Thanksgiving!

Most of us who read Sarah Young's words in Jesus Calling want to be closer to our Lord. Many of her devotions are written around the idea of thankfulness and gratitude. I started searching the Bible for the use of the words: gratitude, thanks, and thankfulness. There are at least 100 references to the word thanks and dozens more with the other terms. No wonder we need to spend time giving praise and thanksgiving to our Lord! As we are reminded time and again, being thankful is one of the "keys" to begin growing spiritually.

I have copied a few more verses that are related to those in today's devotional. These are ones that have spoken so powerfully to me. I pray that you will share with me and other readers any scriptures that you use as reminders of being thankful.

Philippians 4:4-6: Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 4:2: Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Colossians 3:15-16: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Worship the Lord in the Beauty of His Holiness!

I remember singing the hymn, "Morning Has Broken" when I was on a weekend retreat at a lake as we watched the sun rise over the water. However, we don't need to be on a lake or retreat to enjoy God's wondrous world and Love. I pray that at the beginning of this day and everyday you and we will "sing love songs" to God's name and give ourselves totally to Him. In this way, we will be filled with His Love and Presence.

The words to this hymn are wonderful reminders for us to see God in the beauty of the world - and all things. Please join me in seeking God's Presence wherever we go and in whatever we do today and everyday.

Which Masters Do I Serve?

When I first heard a sermon on this topic, I was almost offended. My first thought was, "Of course, I serve only God!" However, after I reflected on the scripture from Matthew, I realized that many times I serve "masters" - including money, power, material goods, etc.

Our church recently focused on a book/Bible study about becoming disciples for our Lord. One of many points of focus was on the spiritual discipline of "simplicity." One of our pastors reminded us that many of us have so much "stuff" that it distracts us in our worship time and keeps us from being in the Presence of our Lord. I haven't gotten there yet, but I'm working on simplifying my life by sharing with others some of the many blessings and "things" that I have in my home. I pray for God's guidance in doing so and that He will help all of us share our blessings as we strive to be His disciple.

Daily "Sweet Hours of Prayer"

Today's scripture from John 10:10 is one that that has been meaningful in my life. I truly think God wants us to have an abundant life and to live joyfully. However, we are continually reminded through scripture and these devotional readings that it is up to us to trust totally in our Lord for us to have an abundant, joyful life.

The words of the hymn, "Sweet Hour of Prayer" are powerful ones about God's Love and Presence when we come to Him with an open heart. Are You Enjoying God's Gift of the Precious Present?

Every year there are many countries that celebrate the "Day of Prayer," a special time of focusing on God - but on different days of the year. In the United States, we are celebrating this day today.  I pray that everyone who reads today's devotional, scriptures and blog will take extra time to pray for God's Love, Peace and Presence to fill our world. 

I sent a book called The Precious Present to my newly-wed cousins. Today's devotional is certainly related to the meaning of this book - not to worry about tomorrow but enjoy God's gifts of today. However, Sarah Young's words remind us that in order to do this we have to stay in "constant communion" with our Lord. In that way, we don't have time for worry and are filled with God's Presence and Peace and are better able to enjoy the "precious present."

Rejoice - Even When Things Go Wrong!

I often find it challenging to be joyful when things are going wrong. What I do find comforting is today's scripture from 2 Corinthians 12:9 as I have mentioned in a previous blog. This is a powerful Promise and blessing to understand and believe that God can and WILL use me even with my many weaknesses.

In my church we have been hearing sermons and studying a book that deals with spiritual disciplines and gifts as we strive to become disciples for our Lord. We recently sang the hymn, "Take My Life and Let It Be" as we committed to do all we can to be more like Jesus. As I was reading today's devotional and scriptures, I felt as if this is what God is wanting me to do - Give my entire life to Him and let Him use it even in my weaknesses!

I pray that you will listen carefully to the lyrics of this beautiful hymn and join me in committing my entire being to our Lord.

Everything I Own is Merely a Loan!

I once heard a pastor use the words in this title, "Everything I Own Is Merely a Loan" - and it has stayed in my head and heart for many years! Sarah Young's words in today's devotional mean about the same thing and spoke as a reminder of God's blessings.

Once I accepted the fact that everything I am and "have" belong to God, it became somewhat of a spiritual "discipline" to thank Him daily in my "gratitude journal." I pray that if you don't do this kind of writing, you will begin doing so. It has made a tremendous difference in my life and I know it will in yours.

The lyrics in the hymn, "Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart" have repeatedly touched my heart and soul, and I pray that they do the same for you. Another hymn related to today's scripture from Psalm 119:1-5 is "Thy Word Is A Lamp Unto My Feet."

God's Presence in Every Decision

As today's devotional reminds us, each day offers many choices and decisions for as long as we live on this earth. I pray that you and I and all who love our Lord will have the courage to choose God and His Presence as we make these decisions.

We know that God has chosen us to be His hands and feet and mouth through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The lyrics in the meaningful hymn "Here I Am Lord" is one that I sometimes use during  my worship time as I open myself to God's guidance throughout this and everyday. I pray that you will do the same.

Come to Our Lord - With Open Hands and Heart!

Sarah Young's words that particularly spoke to me today are about how God's Power and Love can pour into us even in times of weakness - if we realize our need for Him.  Along with this also comes  the assurance that even when we fall but stay dependent on God, we can still have His Presence with us.

Related closely to those words are the ones from Isaiah 40:29: "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak."  I think the reason those words mean so much to me is that in the last several years of my life, I have had a number of on-going health issues - which often make me feel extremely weak. It is so refreshing to my heart and soul to know of God's assurance of His Presence and that He wants us to be dependent on Him.

Another of God's Promises and a favorite of mine is this scripture passage:
2 Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
God's most amazing Grace provides us with His Power and blessings. It is up to us to open our heart and be receptive to His guidance and blessings.

The lyrics in the gospel hymn, "One Day at a Time" express how I often feel in my weakness and dependence on God. Do you have a hymn or scriptures to share that bring you comfort in times of weakness?

Do I Go Up or Down With My Problems?

I have never been able to really "welcome problems!" However, as I look back on many of them, I see that they have often drawn me "up" - to be so much closer to my Lord. I remember hearing this from a counselor many years ago when I was going through divorce. - He said that was a choice that I had to make and that I could either go "up or down"  - and even referred me to a book called, "Growing Through Divorce."

I don't know how people survive the many challenges of life without knowing and accepting God's Love, Word, and Presence. The beautiful hymn, "You Are My All in All" continues to be a comfort and reminder of  His Love and Power. The entire hymn is printed below the hymn on this link, but I wanted to include the first verse:
     You are my strength when I am weak
     You are the treasure that I seek
     You are my all in all
     Seeking You as a precious jewel
     Lord, to give up I'd be a fool
     You are my all in all.

I pray that God will fill us with His Strength and Light.

Keep Our Eyes on Jesus

Today's devotional is related to an earlier one about staying close to our Lord no matter what is happening around us. However, it can also relate to the spiritual practices of silence and solitude. As we learn more about these spiritual practices, it is important to discipline ourselves to use them each and everyday in order that we can and WILL stay focused on our Lord. A beautiful hymn that echoes this thought is "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus." I pray that these powerful lyrics will touch your heart and mind as they have for me.

I've never been a person who others would call "extremely self-disciplined!"  In spite of this, when I really focused on the "fruits of the Spirit" I began a daily prayer for that particular fruit, along with the others:
 Galatians 5:22-23
       But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (which is self-discipline). 

I pray that God will help you and me stay focused on Him and feel His Presence in all that we do.

Be Still Before Our Lord!

I'm not sure where I heard a comment to the effect that "Without silence and solitude, there can be no spiritual growth." Today's devotional and scriptures are such good reminders of the blessings that we can receive when we rest quietly and alone in the Presence of our Lord.

There seems to be a longing within many of us for "rest for our souls" in our noisy world filled with demands of work, technology, care of our family, etc. It is up to us to find a time for this quiet rest, but also to ensure that this time is used to become closer to our Lord. By doing so, we might be amazed that we become refreshed and strengthened to face the challenges of our day to day living.

During today's worship time, I pray that you will focus not only on the devotional, but the words in the scripture from Psalm 46 along with this beautiful hymn, "Be Still My Soul."

Keep Our Eyes on Jesus!

For a number of years, several of my good friends have told me that it's o.k. to say "NO!" when I'm trying to do too much! Today's devotional is a wonderful reminder that God wants me to save time for Him and keep my eyes on Him. Sarah Young's words that especially spoke to me were that "There are many burned-out Christians who think more is always better, who deem it unspiritual to say no." I know that I have been in that category in the past. However, I do feel that God is leading me to do "something" for Him, but I pray that I will keep my eyes fixed on Him and the He will show me the way.

The beautiful hymn, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" is such a blessing to use during worship time today - even though this rendition only has the first verse. Things of the world really do seem "dim" when we keep our eyes on our Lord.

LISTEN to Our Lord!

It is often a real challenge to "listen" to what the Lord has to say and wants us to do for Him! Even with practicing the spiritual disciplines of  "solitude and silence," I'm am often unsure what God is saying to me. The reading of scriptures and Christian material certainly helps, but what happens after that reading? For me, I quickly forget unless I take time to be quiet and focus on what I have read - and then seek guidance from God.

How do you know you are "listening" to the Lord? The scripture from John 10:27 puts it clearly. "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me." Is it really God's voice and guidance that I "hear and follow?" or is it voices of the world? My spiritual director has suggested to me on several occasions to be aware of the nudges or "coincidences" that seem to be leading me to God's Will.

The second verse of the hymn, "Open My Eyes That I May See" states, "Open my ears that I may hear." Please share ways that you KNOW you are listening to God instead of the world.

Who/What Controls My Mind?

Today's scripture from Romans 8:6 spoke so clearly to me: "...the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace."  I had never thought about Sarah Young's words regarding the mind being the "most restless, unruly part of mankind." What's most disconcerting is that at times in my life, my mind is controlled by the media - computer, newspaper, magazine, television. These thoughts made me desire to have my mind controlled totally by God's Spirit!

A related scripture passage that has very helpful to me is from Philippians 4:8-9:
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
 Surely by asking for God's Presence in our mind and following this "command," we will have a mind filled with God's Spirit and Peace and Love. I pray that you will join me in this "quest."

Our Lord Lives!

May God's Love and Peace be with you on this most blessed day that we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus! The words in the hymn "He Lives" are ones that tell the story and give us His Promises! Another one that has always been a blessing for me on Easter Sunday is "Christ the Lord is Risen Today." I praise God that "They Could Not" keep our Lord in the grave as in this beautiful Easter song!''

Holy Saturday!

Today is sometimes called Holy Saturday and is the last day of Holy Week and Lent during which time we Christians have been preparing for Easter Sunday. It commemorates the day that Jesus Christ's body lay in the tomb. I pray that we take time today to re-read the words of Matthew 27:32-65 which describes the crucifixion, death and burial of our blessed Lord!

Today's scriptures and devotional reading are also blessed reminders of God's unfailing love. I praise and thank Him that His for His most amazing Grace and Love.

This beautiful version of the hymn, "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" is one that reminds us of His Love. Another powerful hymn that describes the Passion of our Lord is "O Sacred Head Now Wounded." God's Amazing Grace, Peace and Love

At the Maundy Thursday (or Holy Thursday) service at my church last night, we were reminded of how our Lord humbled Himself before His disciples by washing their feet - and then told them to love others just as He loved them. There is no doubt that this is the kind of loving and serving that Jesus expects from us.


By living in this way, today's reading and scriptures reassures us that our Lord's Peace is ready to be given to us each and everyday!  I had never understood that God's Peace cannot be stored up for days or weeks to come. Instead, it is up to us to come to our Lord asking Him daily for His Peace - and then being confident that He will give us all that we need.

I praise and thank God during this Holy Week for His most "Amazing Grace" and Love! I also pray this version of this beautiful hymn may touch your heart in a powerful way; it includes lyrics about being "ransomed" through our Lord's "unending love."

In Christ Alone Is Our Strength!

I sometimes wonder if I have ADDS - attention deficit disorder of the spirit!! Today's devotional is a blessed reminder that our Lord wants us to constantly  be aware of His Presence. By doing so, His Spirit is able to work in and through us, and we can be filled with His Peace and Joy!

During this Holy Week, I pray that we all keep especially focused "In Christ Alone" in whom we find our strength and help as the lyrics tell us. As I read this devotional and scriptures and listened to the words in the song, I wondered how I could ever become distracted from His most amazing Love for us! It is only through that constant awareness of our Lord's Presence that we can face the challenges of life "calmly and confidently" as Sarah Young tells us in today's reading.

What a blessing to know that we don't have to be afraid when we trust Him and remember His Love for us!

Jesus Calls Us to Remember Him!

The more I study scriptures and Christian books, the more I believe that Jesus DOES call us on a daily basis to live a life of gratitude - without complaining. He blesses us in so many ways but I confess that I often take these blessings for granted and don't show my gratitude.

God offers us the greatest gift of all - His Precious Son - who died for us! I think our Lord must be sad at times when we forget to be grateful for many of His gifts but especially for the life and suffering of Jesus Christ. It is through Jesus that we have access to the Fruits of His Spirit:  love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, generosity, faithfulness and wisdom.

I believe that our Lord and Savior is calling us to a fuller life with Him here on earth as well as in heaven. "Jesus Calls Us" is an old hymn that has touched the lives of many as it calls us to walk closer to Him. Another beautiful Christian song is "10,000 Reasons" which can prompt us to continually worship and thank God for all His blessings.

 I pray that we focus closely on the words of these beautiful songs. Also let us take time to reflect on with the scriptures and devotional in our worship time today.

Don't Be Afraid - Just Stay Close to Him!

A recurring message in the Bible and in Sarah Young's writings is "Don't be afraid!" We are reminded that if we just "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. I keep wondering why I can't do that ALL THE TIME and throw away my doubts and worries and fears!

During this Holiest week of the year, I pray for you and me to be able to have a closer walk with our Lord. In that way  we can let go of our fears and have a greater Peace with Him. "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" is a beautiful hymn that embraces reassuring words including:
      "I'll be satisfied as long; As I walk, let me walk close to Thee."

Hints of Heaven

Today's reading reminds us that we can experience the essence or spirit of heaven by staying near to our Lord and holding continually to Him. Many times I am in such a hurry with the struggles in life that I miss the "hints of heaven" that are being provided for us everyday. Please join me today in stopping to observe and enjoy some of God's many blessings - the sun shining, birds singing, flowers and trees, family and friends. Then let us take time to praise Him for all that He does for us.

The final part of the devotional and both scripture passages are ones of "hope." I thank God for His Promise of our heavenly home - and for giving us the blessing of hope! I pray that you enjoy this old gospel hymn about hope, "Whispering Hope."

Joyfully, We Adore Our Lord!

Today's devotional and scriptures provide such a simple guide for joyful and victorious living! - We are assured that kind of living will happen when we allow our lives to "merge" with our Lord by doing all things for Him. 

I have always been inspired by the thought of Jesus as the vine - and me as a little branch. By Jesus providing all I need, I am able to "bear much fruit" - even amidst my many weaknesses.

I pray that you will enjoy the beautiful hymn, "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" in your worship time today. It is a blessed reminder of living joyfully and includes a video showing some of God's wonders along with related scripture passages.

Trusting Instead of Grumbling!

After reflecting on today's devotional, I had to admit that it sometimes describes my reactions to "life." - I'm so trusting when things go well, but that trust tends to "slow down" when problems occur!

Earlier today I was reading Philippians 2:13-15:
 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky. Surely God is giving us a nudge on the importance of trusting our Lord in all circumstances - and to stop grumbling when things don't go as we think they should. Will you join me in praising our Lord for all His nudges as He guides us to do His Work and His Will?  What a glorious feeling to think that we might "shine...like stars in the sky!"

This is the Day The Lord Has Made!

When I taught kindergarten about 36 years ago in a private Christian school, we began every day singing, "This is the Day That The Lord Has Made."  (Here is another version that refreshes the idea that "We Will Rejoice and Be Glad In It!") I know that I didn't appreciate the words then nearly as much as I now "consume them" in my later years of life. On some days, I still begin by either humming or singing these words. On other days, I start with a prayer of gratitude in which I say, "Thank you Lord for this new day, and that I can walk and talk and stand upright!"

Another reminder in today's reading is that of not worrying about the past or future. Instead, we are told to have "open hands of faith" in order for God to fill us with His Love, Peace and Guidance. 

Later today, I will be attending my 50th college reunion. It was at this Christian college that I began to truly turn my life over to my Lord. It was here that I understood how much God loved me and friends loved me - and that people believed in me. What a privilege and joy to have had these experiences and now to renew relationships that changed my life!

I Trust You and Thank You, Jesus!

There have been several recent devotionals about trust which I see as God reminding us how important is our trust in Him. I have been repeating the phrase, "I trust you, Jesus," several times throughout the day and night; I do think it's making a difference, especially when I am letting anxiety fill my mind!

In addition to the word, trust, today's reading reminds us to always give thanks. I truly believe that a heart filled with gratitude will make a tremendous difference in our lives - and in our relationship with our Lord. I have previously written about some research studies that prove that having an "attitude of gratitude" can make a difference in our physical and mental health! I think that must also prove that our heart, mind, and soul are totally connected!

Today's scripture passage from Romans 8:28 is one that has spoken to me and allowed me to look forward in life when I am in the "mire." The NIV says:  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. It doesn't say that God caused all those bad things to happen but it DOES say that He can bring good out of them. That's how I have been able to find hope - and I pray that you will do the same!

NOTHING Can Separate Us From God's Love!

Today's scriptures and devotional are such powerful reminders that God IS WITH US - ALL THE TIME! Several years ago I was visiting a friend in the hospital when our pastor came to visit her during one of her last days on earth. He read to her today's passage from Romans 8:38-39 that tells us that NOTHING can separate us from the Love of God. It seemed that I could feel that God's Presence was truly in that room and especially with my friend, filling her with Peace.

I have previously suggested that you listen to the beautiful Christian song, "I'll Never Let God of Your Hand." As I'm listening to the words again today, I feel as if God is holding my hand and giving me strength to move on through the challenges of life. I praise Him and thank Him for His Presence and pray that you will feel that Presence and Love in your worship today.

God's Power - Within You and Me

The power of God is available to us at all times in order that we can be His Disciples in our world. In my church, we are learning to become a disciple by looking more closely at what Jesus did and then striving to be more like Him, work like Him, act like Him, and have a heart like His.

In addition to the scriptures in today's devotional, I pray that you will take the time to read Colossians 3:1-17 in order to find ways to do our Lord's Will - and to stay in closer touch with Him. He sets the standards at a high level but it is certainly worth the effort to know that we are becoming more like our Lord! In addition, the words in the praise song, "My Life is in You Lord!" reiterates thoughts from today's devotional and scriptures.

God Is the Potter - We are the Clay

As I was reading today's devotional and scriptures, I pictured in my mind God molding me into being exactly the way He wants me to be! Will you join me in saying "Yes," to the Master Potter as we go through this day and each day of our lives?

Focus On What We Have - Rather Than What We Don't Have!

I was raised on a very small farm in a nearby state and grew up without many of life's pleasures and conveniences. I still don't have a lot in the eyes of the wealthy of the world but I am very blessed with many comforts that I only dreamed about as a child. Maybe it's because of these "comforts," and my rather "poor" background that I now try to daily bring God the "sacrifice of thanksgiving."

This Christian video, "Walking in the Light of God," is one that I pray will be a blessing to you as you worship our Lord today. What a beautiful reminder that everyday is a day to praise our Lord!!

Scripture is clear in telling us to "be thankful in all things." I have previously written about the value of writing in a gratitude journal as a daily practice of praising our Lord and focusing on what we have instead of what we don't have!

Fruit of the Spirit

I feel very blessed to realize that God does grant us the Gifts of His Spirit - even in our times of weakness. However, there are admittedly times in my life that my heart and mind are so filled with concerns, worries, and/or busyness that there is not room for those most precious Gifts! Again, I want to bring to mind the spiritual practices of silence and solitude, scriptural reading and reflection (lectio divino), reviewing our day (Examen), and other "spiritual disciplines" that will bring us nearer our Lord. In these times, He can and will show us His way and fill us with His Spirit.

Two other relevant scriptures in addition to the two in today's devotional are:
     Galatians 5:22-23:   
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
    2 Corinthians 12:8-10 (NIV)
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Let us pray for each other that these Gifts of the Spirit will "take over" our lives so that we may become more like our Lord - and help make the world a better place for all.

Be Still Before the Lord

Today's reading is a clear reminder that we live in a world filled with noise and speed! It also prompts us to practice the spiritual discipline of solitude! What a blessing to know that our Lord is pleased by our desire to seek His Face - even when we don't meet that goal!

I have been in several church classes in which we talked about the fact that God wants us to be only in His Presence through times of silence and solitude. On several occasions, a couple members of the group have expressed despair in that "I did this spiritual practice, but nothing happened!" The same thing occurred to me the first times I practiced this spiritual discipline. However, it was many months later that I realized that I had been changing and was feeling a new-found peace - even in crisis-type moments. I'm sharing this because I have found from my own experience and many spiritual writers that we can NOT expect a burning bush or clap of thunder during the first days, weeks or possibly months of practicing this or other spiritual practices. It takes time! Please don't get get discouraged with practicing spiritual disciplines in that they can and will change your life.

I realize that I recently posted the beautiful hymn, "Be Still My Soul" and am doing so again today. Today's version is sung by Alex Boye who is gifted with a most amazing voice that makes me want to listen to him over and over. I pray that the lyrics and music will "still our soul" so that we can be closer to our Lord.

God Can Be Our All In All

Some of Sarah Young's words especially spoke to me today: "In Me you are complete. Your capacity to experience Me is increasing, through the removal of debris and clutter from your heart."  As I get older, I do yearn more and more to be in the Presence of our Lord. Today's reading reminds us that He offers us so much but it is up to us to clear our heart and mind so that our Lord can make us "complete!" This goes back to spending time in silence and solitude with Him.

The powerful words in the hymn, "You are My All in All" offer a beautiful reflection and worship hymn related to today's devotional. I pray that these words will speak to you as they have to me.

How to Get Rid of Weeds!

I will have to admit that at many times in my life, I have weeds growing in my heart - weeds of worry, selfishness, laziness, etc. From today's reading, I am reminded that this is a choice that I make each and every day! God has planted Peace in my heart but it often gets overrun with these weeds! I asked myself after reading the devotional and scriptures, "How and why would I ever make that choice of weeds instead of God's Peace and Love and Presence?" I guess my only answer is called "life!" I get so busy that I don't stop for a time of solitude with my Lord!

Does My To-Do List Control My Life - or Does God?

Until today's devotional reading, I had never thought that my to-do list might be the idol "that directs my life!" What a blessed reminder that instead of allowing that to happen, we can ask our Lord to guide us moment by moment and stay near to us. I believe that God is waiting for us to be in His Presence and staying in continuous touch with Him - rather than trying to fix everything ourselves. Please share with me and other readers how you handle all the ups and downs of the day - and life.

The actual date of Easter is still several weeks away. However, I don't think our Lord wants us to celebrate Easter one day out of the year but rather ALL THROUGHOUT THE YEAR so that we are constantly reminded of what He has done for us. I found a medley of hymns that will serve as reminders today and all year - about Jesus' death and resurrection:  "Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "At the Cross."

Let Peace Rule!

The first two sentences in today's devotional spoke profoundly to me: "Taste and see that I am good. The more intimately you experience Me, the more convinced you become of My goodness." The question is, "How intimately do I experience my Lord?" To really get to know others, we have to spend time with them - and LISTEN to them as well as talk to them. I am slowly "assimilating" this idea as part of spiritual formation as I strive to grow closer to my Lord and become more like Him.

I hope that you will go to www.BibleGateway.com or another Bible-search link and input the word "Peace." There is no doubt that God DOES want us to live in peace here on earth as well as in heaven! Otherwise, there would not be so many references to this little word in the Bible! Today's scripture from Colossians 3:15 says it so clearly: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful."

Let us praise God for filling us with His Peace so that we can say and sing, "It Is Well With My Soul." If you have never read the story behind the song, it is told in this rendition of "It Is Well." It will be worth your time to read about the writer, Horatio Spafford when he wrote this beautiful hymn.

I Trust You, Jesus

After what Jesus did for us, it seems like a little thing to trust Him in all things! However, I will admit that sometimes when I am in a difficult situation, I "forget" to use those powerful words, "I trust you, Jesus!" The scripture passage from Proverbs is one that particularly spoke to me about that kind of trust and NOT trying to do things by myself.

In this beautiful hymn "Are You Able?", God is asking us if we trust Jesus enough to follow Him. I pray that during this Lenten Season and the coming years, you and I will have that kind of faith and trust with the assurance that we will find our Lord when we seek Him with all our heart.

Take Time To Sit In God's Presence

Today's scripture passage from John 16:33 especially spoke to me. We know that as long as we live in this world, troubles do come along. We also are reminded that only through our Lord Jesus overcoming the world, we "may have Peace." 

A hymn related to the Season of Lent and to today's devotional is "Take Time to Be Holy." In both of these we are told that our Lord wants us to live focused on His Presence. In order to do this we need to take the time to be Holy - and "speak oft to the Lord." I pray that we will all make it a priority to take the time to focus on these words from the devotional, scriptures and this hymn in our worship today. I also pray that we may all take that most important time to sit in the Presence of our Lord.

God Gave His All For Us

As we enter further into the Lenten Season, I pray that we constantly remember all that our Lord has done for us.  As is written in today's devotional and scriptures: our God is one who gives and gives and gives. It is our responsibility to be open and attentive to Him in order to receive all His gifts including His Perfect Peace.

The words in two beautiful hymn "I Gave My Life For Thee" & To God Be the Glory, remind us that Jesus gave His Life for us - and then asks what we will do for Him. Please join me during this time in praising our Lord for His amazing Love and then striving to serve Him and become more like Him each and everyday.

Be Still Before Our Lord

Our world is such a busy one that it is often very difficult to just sit in stillness with our Lord. From today's devotional and scriptures, it is clear that being still in God's Presence is one of the spiritual disciplines that is needed by everyone - if God is going to "renew our mind."

The scripture passage from Romans has had a special meaning for me - when I really accepted the fact that God will TRANSFORM me! That transformation is what will help us see, understand and do God's good and perfect Will.

"Be Still My Soul" is the hymn that first came to mind when I started today's reading. I pray that you have time to "be still in God's Presence" and focus on these meaningful lyrics.

Hope In The Lord!

The opening words of today's devotional spoke particularly to me as we are moving further into Season of Lent: "Waiting on Me (God) means directing your attention to Me in hopeful anticipation of what I will do."  This time involves waiting, trusting, and a "resurgence of hope." Let's join together to glorify God to the fullest and enjoy His Presence and Love - and help others do the same.


During this Lenten season, I decided to include a hymn relevant to this special time of the year. For today, I chose "Love That Will Not Let Me Go." Please share with me and other readers any hymns that are especially meaningful to you at Easter.

Thanksfulness - or Grumbling!

Several years ago, the pastor at my church gave everyone a rubber bracelet. He asked us to wear it all the time and to use it to test ourselves for every time we complained. We were to change from one arm to the other each time that we caught ourselves complaining about anything. It was amazing how many times many of us found that we had to move our bracelet from one arm to the other!  I can't remember what the bracelet had written on it but I feel quite sure it had to do with thankfulness.

Today's scriptures and devotional make it clear that God does not want us to grumble/complain. Instead, he wants us to see the "Light of My (God's) Presence shining on all your circumstances" by keeeping a grateful attitude. Some of Sarah Young's words that especially touched me were, "Thankfulness is a safeguard against this deadly sin (grumbling)." I praise God that He has given us that safeguard!

During this Lenten season, will you pray with me and join me in being thankful in all things - and omit complaints from our vocabulary?  The beautiful hymn, "Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart" is one that I will listen to regularly as a reminder of all that I have to be thankful for -  as I strive to develop a total "attitude of gratitude."

Let Go - And Simplify!

Another spiritual discipline that I recently discovered in a Bible study class was "simplifying." I did not know that simplifying my life had anything to do with becoming closer to our Lord! The leader of the class explained that when we have less "stuff," we use less time looking for things or being distracted by many things - and thus have more time to spend with God.

Today's devotional starts out by telling us that this is a time in life to let go of "loved ones, of possessions, of control." Sarah Young suggests that we can do this be resting in the Presence of God where we are "complete" and can "bask in the light" of the Love of our Savior. This is another nudge for me to simplify my life by letting go!

I now have another goal - that of simplifying my life by getting rid of things that I don't use or particularly need. Will you join me on this road - and then share with me and others how it makes you feel after a few weeks of simplifying our lives?

Open Our Eyes - To See God's Abundant Love!

As was written yesterday in Jesus Calling and on this blog, God DOES want us to rejoice and thank Him for His Presence and His Peace - and to trust Him in all things. Today's reading and scriptures remind us that our Lord is one of ABUNDANCE and pours that abundance of His love on us when we seek Him. Our job is to open our eyes, heart, and soul so that we can see and hear and feel His abundant Love - and then rejoice in that Love.

When I started college at a Christian school in Arkansas, we were required to attend chapel services. I had never heard the hymn, "Open My Eyes that I May See," but those words have continually touched my heart as I hope they will for you.

Rejoice - And Be Thankful!

It always amazes me when I hear stories and see pictures from some areas of the world where people have little or no food to eat or water to drink or clothes to wear! Yet many of these people appear to REJOICE in the Lord with tremendous gratitude in a way that I only wish for! I'll never forget the comment from a friend who went on a mission trip to one of these countries: "They have what I want (joy and peace), and I have what they need (food, house, clothing, etc.)" Surely that can happen in only one way - as today's devotional tells us: "Practice trusting and thanking Me (God) continually."


I was not familiar with the hymn, "Rejoice the Lord is King!" but found that that many of the words remind me of today's scriptures from Philippians and Psalms: "Lift up your heart; Lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say rejoice!" Please join me in listening closely to the beautiful words of this hymn as you worship today.

Trust and Joy vs. Fear!

If we asked anyone what they would rather have in their lives - strength and joy - or fear, it would be a quick and easy response! Of course, we all search for joy and most of us really WANT to trust in our Lord. I used to think that it was a magical, automatic thing that would happen - I would say that I loved God and suddenly I would have no fear or worries or difficult times! All at once I would have unimaginable spiritual and emotional strength! Now I realize that is not the way things happen! It is up to me to spend time alone with God listening for His Word and Will; I also need to pray, study Scripture and meditate on what I read as I become more aware of His Presence in my life.

I have previously mentioned a wonderful book called, "Choose Joy" by Kay Warren. It really made me think about my choices in life - one of those choices being joyful. Today's devotional and scriptures remind us that God does want us to share His Joy by living in His Presence.

Overflowing With Gratitude!

On many days, I become so busy and distracted that I don't take the time to enjoy God's miraculous blessings: blooming flowers, a beautiful sunset, a new life, a life that has recovered from illness, etc! That might also mean that I don't let God know how grateful I am for His Spirit and all His blessings. This is when taking time for solitude to be with my Lord is a must in my daily life (as was discussed in yesterday's blog).

A spiritual discipline is one that is done on a regular basis - hopefully daily. It is through solitude, prayer, Bible reading, and meditation that I can feel God's Spirit and recognize that His Spirit is directing my life. It is through this kind of discipline that we can be "overflowing with gratitude!" LISTEN To God - In Solitude and Silence

I recently went to a church class about the spiritual discipline of "solitude." As I was reading today's devotional and scriptures, I began thinking more about listening to God from the "depths" of our being during times of solitude. I started a web search on the term and found many interesting sites. One made a statement similar to one that I had just heard in class that we can not hear the voice of the Spirit in our busy, clamoring world and that growing spiritually only comes through solitude and silence. The connection that I found to today's devotional is that God is constantly speaking to us but we must take time to listen if we are going to "let the Spirit take charge" of our mind.

Trust Our Lord - One Day At A Time!

The words of Sarah Young that especially spoke to me today were about God's Spirit in us being our "resident Tutor" helping us in the "supernatural endeavor of TRUST. The scripture passage from Matthew is one that lets us know that we only have to do this one day at a time - since tomorrow will take care of its own worries!

I looked for references to the word "trust" on a Bible web site. There are 170 references in the New English Version and 188 in the King James Version, many of them being in relation to trusting in our Lord. One of my favorites that has upheld me through many trials is:

God's Never-Ending Love and Understanding

What a blessing to be reminded that our Lord WILL NEVER leave us or forsake us! - Today's devotional and scripture brought to mind the words of the beautiful hymn, "His Eye is On the Sparrow." I sometimes forget that He does watch over the birds of the air - as He watches over all of us with His understanding Love.

I pray that God will fill us with His love so that it may overflow into the lives of those around us!

God Still Loves Us - Even When We Are Weak!

Many people in this day and time consider abundant life as one with wealth and health - as we are reminded in Sarah Young's words. What a blessing to realize that it is through keeping our eyes on our Lord that we have an abundant life and Peace with Him! This kind of "abundant life" with our Lord CAN NOT be bought with all the money in the world!

A scripture that is closely related to those in today's reading is 2 Corinthians 12:9:  "My grace is sufficient for your. My power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me." The first time I really understood the power is these words, I was overwhelmed by God's Grace and Love and Acceptance of me - in all my weaknesses.

Listen to God's Love Song - Instead of the Noises of the World!

We are blessed to be able to make numerous choices each and everyday of our lives. I sometimes want to blame others for things that go wrong in my life. However, when the truth comes out about these times, I realize that some of them occurred because I have made poor choices.

One of my/our most important choices is determining how much time to spend with our Lord. The amazing thing is that this one choice can make a tremendous difference in how goes our days and lives. Do you use the "fruit of the spirit" of "self-discipline" to ensure that you DO take time for our Lord - at the beginning, middle and end of the day? That's one of my many prayers that God will fill me with this and other "fruits" of His Spirit.

I was not familiar with "A Love Letter From Jesus." but it has such a wonderful message. I hope and pray that today - and everyday - we can "take minibreaks from the world, taking time to sit in My (God's) Presence" - while focusing on words such as these along with scripture passages as we seek His Presence and Will for our lives.

Be Still - And Receive God's Love and Joy!

I think God is trying to tell me to "enjoy" life and to receive His most generous Love and Joy! Last year, my Sunday School class studied a book on joy (Choose Joy by Kay Warren), and I have read articles, emails, and devotionals all related to joy. Additionally, several friends have given me "joy" plaques, magnets, & pictures.

Today's devotional and scriptures remind us to "Be still, and know that I am God." All we need to do is rest in our Lord and receive His blessings. This sounds so easy but many of us are so busy with life that we don't think we have time to "rest in the Lord" - and to receive His Joy.

Have you ever sat in a room with a group of children singing, "I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Down in My Heart?" You can see God's Joy beaming from their eyes! It's one of those old children's songs that "make" the singers feel His joy! I hope and pray that you will experience God's Joy as you worship Him today.

Living Above Our Circumstances - With Our Lord!

Until reading today's devotional, I had never thought of "living above my circumstances" - in a spiritual way rather than how it is often thought of in parts of our world! Instead, I have thought of it as spending more money and buying more "stuff" than I can afford (That's what my parents said!) - on credit cards.

Life on this earth is often filled with trouble and distress. What a blessing to know that we can live above these troubles - and be filled with joy and peace since God has overcome the world. One of my daily "breath prayers" is "Abide in me and me in Thee" in order that God fill me with His Love, His Joy and Peace.

I still remember my friend who kept talking about wanting some kind of joy in her life. She is a wonderful Christian lady who just hadn't realized that is possible - by spending more time with our Lord. What about you? Can you feel God's Joy and Peace in your life?

I have enjoyed listening today to "I Need Thee Every Hour." This beautiful hymn reminds me that I must spend time with God - not just occasionally, but every hour.

Wait - Trust - Hope in our Lord!

Today's scriptures and devotional are blessed reminders that it is up to us to trust in the Lord and keep our eyes on Him - and also to be willing to wait on His timing. It is only from this trust and patience that we can attain hope. I still recall the words of my father on what we thought was his death bed: "My only hope is in the Lord."

Have any of you tried the short prayer, "I trust you, Jesus," many times throughout the day - as was mentioned in an earlier devotional?  If you have been doing this and feel a change in your life and/or attitude, please share with me and others. I pray that you are feeling more of God's Presence, Peace, and Hope - that are truly "anchors for the soul."

Walk By Faith, Not By Sight!

It seems that if I walked only by what I see in this hurried, fear-filled world, I could not make it through the day! I and several friends agree that we don't know how people survive without God's Love and Presence. Along with that is the power of prayer. I truly believe that we can feel that Peace and Presence that can only come from our Lord through our prayers and those of others who are praying for us.

During three hospital stays in the last two years, I have had a most "unlikely" peace. Even when the doctor told me that he thought I had a very serious illness (though that was not true), I still felt a wonderful peace. It was only later that I thought through the fact that many people were praying for me. I praise God for the power of prayer!

Today's devotional and scriptures spoke clearly to me about not having to depend on my own strength but rather depend on God's. I seem to have less and less of my own energy each and everyday. Therefore, it is only through God's Spirit that is empowering me to keep on - keeping on!

Be On The Lookout For God's Guidance!

My spiritual director has reminded me a number of times to watch out for nudges from God. She says that many times these feelings of being nudged to do a certain thing - call a certain person, visit a friend or shut-in, email encouragement to someone, etc., may very well be the direction God is wanting me to receive. I think that today's devotional is telling us the same thing when it says "be on the lookout for all that I am doing."

The scripture passages are both such wonderful reassurances that God does hold us by the hand and is a shield for us throughout life. I have previously referred to the words of the beautiful Christian song, "I'll Never Let God of Your Hand," and I am doing so again today. These words have encouraged me and many others during both challenging and good times - and I pray that they will do the same for you.

A few weeks ago, Sarah Young's devotional had a suggestion to repeat the words, "I trust you Jesus," many times a day.  Have any of you been able to do that? Do you have any stories to share about the result of that commitment and trust?

Rest in God's "Radiant" Presence!

For many of us, life seems to go faster as we get older. I am sometimes in a group of friends who have at least 5 or 6 things to do everyday - in semi-retirement/retirement years! While reading today's devotional, I began thinking about the choices that I make to allow my world to "spin faster and faster." In this time of life that is "supposed" to be one with more time for rest and recreation, I wonder why I choose to keep rushing!

Last year I heard a pastor speak about various spiritual disciplines - including solitude and simplicity. Her words reminded me that we must have times of solitude when we are "listening" to our Lord in order to be more closely connected with Him and to feel His Peace and Presence. Along with this comes simplicity since our lives sometimes get so filled with things and/or activities, we don't have time to have that solitude - and Peace.

Today I listened to the old hymn, "It Is Well With My Soul," and thought it closely relates to today's devotional and scripture passages. A few of the lyrics say, "Whatever my lot, you have taught me to say, It is well with my soul." In my younger life, I thought that just "happened" without any effort on my part. I now realize that I must take time to rest in God's Presence - talking and listening to Him and seeking His direction and Peace.

Seek First God's Face - and His Will

I had never thought about one of Sarah Young's comments about anything we desire more than God becomes an idol. Today's devotional make it so clear that we should be seeking God's Face and talking to Him about what we are pursuing in order to be clear that this is His Will. I hope and pray that I will never have any idols in my life - except for my Lord!

I pray that the beautiful hymn, "Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God," will bless you as it has me in my worship time today. I'm sure that you notice that this hymn comes directly from today's Scripture passage from Matthew 6.

Joy in the Midst of Trials

The scripture passage from James 1:2-3 spoke to me in a most profound manner! I praise God for His assurance that joy can come - even during our trials and temptations - and that from these can come endurance and steadfastness and patience! What blessed assurance are these promises!

I have recently referred to a study that in my Sunday School class from the book, "Choose Joy!" by Kay Warren. I highly recommend this book to any who are seeking to find joy even in the difficult times life.

In what ways does your life relate to today's devotional and scriptures? I keep hearing from friends that on many days, the words from Jesus Calling are surely "meant" for them and just what they needed. Please share with me and others when that happens in your life.

Let Him Lead Us On His Path

I'm not sure that I have any comprehension of the magnitude of God's Love and Presence and Being! Today's devotional tells us that our Lord goes ahead of us - and at the same time stays close to us. Even though my "worldly mind" has difficulty understanding this, our reading and scripture make it sound simple - Just TRUST HIM and stay near to Him.

"He Leadeth Me" is an old hymn that came to mind with today's reading. I pray that you will be receive God's Peace and Peace through today's reading, scriptures and the lyrics in this hymn.

Make Friends With Gratitude???

On some days, I think I would have lots of friends - if I made friends with each and everyone of my problems! However, I will admit that I agree with Sarah Young's words that "Every problem can teach you something..." I usually don't see what I am being taught at the time that challenges and difficulties are going on in my life - but rather after the fact, maybe many years later. I embrace the scripture from Romans 8:28 that reminds us that God DOES work for good - in all things to those who love Him.

Some days, it is really difficult to thank God for negative events in my life. Today's reading tells us the importance of doing so. Another scripture that is so clear about this is:
1 Thessalonians 5:18 -Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
The Hymn, "Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart" is one that I have previously suggested. I have listened to it again today during my worship time as it always touches me in a special way about the importance of gratitude.

Refuse to Worry!

I have mentioned before that worry has been one of my many bad lifetime habits. Today's scriptures and devotional give us some guidance on how to keep the "wolves of worry at bay!"
Some of the words that spoke particularly to me were those about staying in CONTINUAL communication with God - and fill that time with our gratitude to our Lord for His many blessings.
If we stay in communion with Him, that must mean that we are constantly aware of His Presence - which "leaves no room for fear."

We know that there are numerous references to "not worrying" and being at peace in the Bible. I've listed a few of these verses and hope that you will share others that are especially meaningful to you. I have found what tremendous helps some of these are to me especially in difficult times - and if I have them memorized. 

    Matthew 6:25  “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?"
    Matthew 6:27  "Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?"
    Matthew 6:28  "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. The do not labor or spin."
      Luke 12:22  Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell
      you, do not worry  about your life, what you will eat; or about
      your body, what you will wear..."

      Luke 21:14   But make up your mind not to worry beforehand
      how you will defend yourselves.

      Philippians 4:7  You will experience God's peace, which is far  
      more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace
      will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you
      trust in Christ Jesus.

Listening For God's Voice

When you are trying to make a decision, how do you determine if God is guiding you or if someone/something on earth is pushing you in a certain direction? I often struggle with this issue and have been known to say, "I'm sure that's what God wants me to do," even though deep in my heart I am unsure.

Today's reading and scriptures remind us that the sheep know the master's voice - and thus we should know our Master's voice! The passage from Ephesians has some ways to do that such as to live a peaceful life, be patient, humble, and gentle - and serve others by bearing their burdens.

As part of my training in spiritual direction, I also know that I MUST spend quiet time with my Lord, listening for His voice - and also studying His Word. What are ways that you discern the voice of our Lord over the many voices we hear on earth?

Abundant Life Through Jesus!

Sarah Young's words speak so clearly about "searching for life in many wrong ways...fleeting pleasures...wealth...deny aging!" What blessed assurance we are given in today's scripture readings about living life abundantly. The passage from Matthew 11 has always brought comfort to me: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest...and you will find rest for your souls."  Every time I read these words, it feels as if Jesus is wrapping me in His loving arms and taking away so many hurts and anxieties.

The passage from I Peter 1:8-9 is the basis for a gospel song called "Joy Unspeakable." Here are the lyrics to the first verse and refrain:

I have found His grace is all complete,
He supplieth ev'ry need;
While I sit and learn at Jesus' feet,
I am free, yes, free indeed.

Trusting Our Lord

What spoke to me most clearly in today's devotional was that the Peace that our Lord gives us is "to the extent that you trust in me (God)."  Several weeks ago, Sarah Young wrote a devotional about the importance of our trust in the Lord; she suggested that we go throughout the day saying repeatedly that "I trust you, Jesus." I have been practicing this more than ever in my life - including several times last year as I was being wheeled into surgery.  It was amazing how God's Presence gave me a remarkable Peace during that time.

Both of today's scripture passages are such wonderful affirmations about the fact that He WILL keep us in "perfect peace" when we take to him our anxieties - and our gratitude of thanksgiving.

The old hymn, "Only Trust Him," is a beautiful one that I pray that you enjoy and use as a reminder to trust our Lord in all things. This is an instrumental version but with the lyrics included.

Let God Be the Judge!

Today's devotional is an uplifting one in that it reminds us that it is not our job to judge ourselves - or others. I often need that reminder in both areas in that I do compare myself to others and wonder why I can't have some of their talents. I also have to admit that it has been a great effort in the past few years to quit wasting my physical, mental and spiritual energies on judging others. It's something I am still working on - with the help of God's Grace and Presence!

I came from a family that gave me mostly negative reinforcement no matter how hard I tried to do things well - and right. I'm sure that I am still searching for some positive affirmation from other people in my life, even though I realize that God sees me "radiant in My (God's) robe of righteousness."  I praise God for His most amazing love and grace and ask that He will help me see others through His eyes.
